Vanderbilt University holds a contract from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics to edit the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education. This is the most prestigious journal in the field of mathematics education. An Assistant Editor is needed to act as the managing editor and staff coordinator, overseeing timeliness in the processing of manuscripts and supporting the work of the Editor in Chief, two Associate Editors, the editor of the Research Commentary section, and occasional guest editors. Position runs until June 30, 2029.
The Assistant Editor will select, develop, write and edit material for various organization publications. Ensure that all materials meet established standards as to appearance and content. Works with minimum supervision, conferring with the editor on unusual matters.
Fully remote from anywhere in the country as long as working hours significantly overlap with Central Standard time.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct all administrative tasks for incoming manuscripts (~250 per year), which includes conducting quality control, searching for potential reviewers, checking for conflicts of interest, inviting and reminding reviewers, and creating decision letter templates
Coordinate work for the rest of the team (manage collaborative task-tracking database and send to-do lists and reminders)
Review and edit correspondence with authors and others, especially decision letters
Work with guest editors and guide them through processes and policies
Analyze reviews and write summaries of major points
Copyedit accepted manuscripts for content, formatting, grammar, and style (both the internal style guide and American Psychological Association style)
Carefully review and correct multiple rounds of proofs before publication
Triage and respond to email correspondence and inquiries
Assign work to editorial assistant(s)
Provide technical support for monthly webinars for 100+ attendees
Prepare monthly and annual reports with submission statistics and other data
Participate in strategic planning and support ad-hoc initiatives
May need to travel to Editorial Panel meetings once per year
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in social sciences or humanities is required
Demonstrated experience as an editor
Expert and exquisite command of the English language
Meticulous attention to detail
Strong skills at using various kinds of technology to managing processes and people
Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet deadlines with little oversight
Robust interpersonal abilities, especially with academics
