Summary

Unit Overview

Michigan Housing is an actively engaged unit within Student Life Auxiliary Services within the Division of Student Life. M Housing serves approximately 11,500 students; 9,100 undergraduate and 2,300 graduate and professional students and their families. Although first-year students are not required to live on campus; historically 96-98% of all new first-year students choose to live on. Currently, the M Housing portfolio consists of 19 residential facilities that include traditional residence halls, apartments, and other living options located in communities on north and central campuses in Ann Arbor. In partnership with Michigan Dining, there are 9 dining halls and 9 retail operations embedded within the residence halls that serve approximately 4 million meals per year. In Fall 2024, M Housing will partner with other units and departments within Student Life to support the residential experience for approximately 20 U-M students on the Marygrove campus, located in Detroit. In Fall 2026, 5 new residence halls housing 2,300 undergraduate students and a new 822-seat dining facility will open to continue M Housing's strong tradition of providing affordable housing options and services for U-M students. In addition to supporting the academic mission of the University, M Housing creates and sustains diverse learning-centered residential communities that ultimately enhance the residential experience and serve as a guide for their work in support of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA).

Job Summary

The Assistant Director/Area Coordinator (ADAC) for the Marygrove Campus, along with the Associate Director for Communication, Assessment, and Support in M Housing, the Director of Michigan Housing, other M Housing team members, various colleagues in Student Life and in partnership with faculty from the Marsal Family School of Education, and other stakeholders, will lead a dynamic team of professionals and student leaders to develop and deliver a range of programs and services designed to enhance the multicultural, educational, and social experiences of first year students who are a part of a new bachelor's degree program known as LEAPS (Learning, Equity, and Problem Solving for the Public Good).

Direct supervision is received from the Associate Director for Communication, Assessment, and Support.

Responsibilities*

40% / Supervision:

  • Exercise functional and administrative supervision for up to 6 professional staff and indirectly over student staff. Duties include direct supervision, selection, coaching and feedback, disciplinary and performance management evaluation of staff.

  • Assist in creating and supporting a professional development plan for supervisees.

  • Provide mentorship and consultation to students and new professional staff based on professional standards and best practices and trends.

  • Lead experiential learning in areas of community development, student development, identity development, intercultural, social justice education, and group facilitation.

30% / Departmental Leadership & Partnership Development:

  • Work closely with LEAPS program managers and faculty and other stakeholders on the Marygrove campus.

  • Oversee cultivation and maintenance of strategic partnerships with campus units, faculty, alumni, residents, and student organizations; particularly as related to enhancing LEAPS and the residential environment.

  • Provide direction for the delivery of the residential experience and Student Life learning outcomes.

  • Direct, advise and provide crisis response for students in the Florent Gillet building during the academic year and other periods when the building is occupied.

  • Create partnerships and opportunities for student learning, intercultural education, and development around the principles of diversity and inclusion in consultation/partnership with LEAPS program staff and faculty.

  • Work closely with Residence Education, Housing Support & Community Responsibility, and other Housing departments to support the development of residential communities that are inclusive.

  • Collaborates with other ADACs for the purpose of strategic planning efforts, centralizing processes, planning and implementation of an enhanced residential experience while maintaining, fostering and developing an engaged community.

20% / Educational, Community and Student Development:

  • Provide direction and expertise to the development and delivery of a range of programs and services designed to enhance students' experiences in the areas of leadership and engagement, social justice and inclusion, interpersonal skills, and integrative learning in consultation/partnership with LEAPS program staff and faculty.

  • Guide area planning, program development and coordination of efforts in alignment with overall departmental needs.

  • Provide direct contact with students and their families in the context of critical incidents.

  • Develop and evaluate strategies for the management of critical incidents in the areas of resident safety, diversity and inclusion, mental health emergencies, and alcohol and drug violations.

10% / Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Attend Residential Education training and departmental meetings to remain connected to broader M Housing programmatic efforts designed to support the residential experience.

  • Manage and direct appropriate financial accounts and area budgets.

  • This position will have other responsibilities/assignments on the Ann Arbor campus during periods when there are no students residing within Marygrove Campus residential facilities (e/g., Spring and Summer terms).

  • May be asked to chair key departmental committees and represent M Housing on various committees across the Division of Student Life.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • A Master's degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Educational Administration, or a related field.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of full-time, progressive professional experience in a college or university housing and residential life setting or similarly applicable experience.

  • Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with supervision, student conduct, crisis response, living learning communities, educational programming, working with faculty, and working with diverse populations.

  • Proven ability to communicate and relate effectively with diverse students, staff and faculty.

  • Demonstrates strong leadership, crisis management, administrative and supervisory skills.

  • Leads with the ability to be a consensus builder while also making decisions in a timely manner.

  • Exhibits strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral, in working with diverse populations of students and staff.

  • Maintains open dialogue with students and staff as well as the ability to nurture an atmosphere of collegiality, inclusiveness, shared responsibility and collective accomplishment.

Additional Information

The successful candidate will display evidence of training and knowledge in managing projects and initiatives, provide examples of collaborative partnerships with areas outside of formal supervisory and departmental boundaries, share their experience about supervising and developing full-time professionals, and articulate prior experience responding to diversity related issues, mental health emergencies, crisis management, and student safety.

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility

  • The ADAC is responsible for the area's Programming & Training and Community Center operational budgets averaging $32,000 and various committee budgets ranging between $500 - $10,000.

Working conditions

  • This position requires on-site work in multiple locations (Marygrove and Ann Arbor campuses). There will be on-call responsibilities. Some evenings and weekends are required.

Physical requirements

  • May need to transport packages of up to fifty pounds to and from various areas in the community, including shelving units, package storage locations, and mailrooms. The incumbent is required to frequently travel around campus to engage with direct reports, campus partners and students.

Direct reports

  • The ADAC directly supervises up to 6 full-time Hall Directors and other administrative staff.

Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/2024 or after, will not be eligible for the university FY24-25 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
