What you'll do
Principal is currently recruiting a motivated individual to fill an Assistant Director-Accounting role on the Financial Controls team within Corporate Accounting. This is a meaningful role that will provide you the opportunity to help drive the financial controls strategy at Principal.
As the Assistant Director, you'll have a variety of experiences, including:
Managing the company-wide assessment of accounting and financial reporting risks and providing assistance to resolve identified control gaps identified.
Managing the development, communication, and maintenance of appropriate guidance necessary to document and evaluate internal controls for financial reporting. You'll also be responsible for the training needed to implement the guidance
Giving direction to business unit teams about their responsibilities related to the quarterly certification of controls and monitoring their adherence to the process
Overseeing the identification, documentation and evaluation of control deficiencies. This includes working with business unity teams and others, to understand and remediate issues quickly. Advance significant unresolved issues as appropriate
Overseeing the development and performance of financial auditing functions delivered to various business units and Managing on-site financial control audits during the year to support corporate objectives
Willingness to travel internationally if required

Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent experience required
10+ years of related experience required. Will consider candidate at the Senior Accounting Analyst level (at least 8 years of experience)
CPA or other applicable certifications strongly preferred
Must have excellent communication and collaboration skills
Must demonstrate the ability to inspire change, informally lead to get results, and find opportunities for process improvements
Experience in financial statement or operational auditing at a management or senior level or above preferred
Knowledge of U.S. GAAP and Statutory (for insurance companies) accounting and reporting requirements is desired
Ability to document processes, risks, and controls and develop a control testing plan. Should possess a basic understanding of IT controls
Have a basic understanding of the disclosure and internal control reporting requirements of Sections 302 and 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002
