What you'll do

Principal is currently recruiting a motivated individual to fill an Assistant Director-Accounting role on the Financial Controls team within Corporate Accounting. This is a meaningful role that will provide you the opportunity to help drive the financial controls strategy at Principal.

As the Assistant Director, you'll have a variety of experiences, including:

  • Managing the company-wide assessment of accounting and financial reporting risks and providing assistance to resolve identified control gaps identified.

  • Managing the development, communication, and maintenance of appropriate guidance necessary to document and evaluate internal controls for financial reporting. You'll also be responsible for the training needed to implement the guidance

  • Giving direction to business unit teams about their responsibilities related to the quarterly certification of controls and monitoring their adherence to the process

  • Overseeing the identification, documentation and evaluation of control deficiencies. This includes working with business unity teams and others, to understand and remediate issues quickly. Advance significant unresolved issues as appropriate

  • Overseeing the development and performance of financial auditing functions delivered to various business units and Managing on-site financial control audits during the year to support corporate objectives

  • Willingness to travel internationally if required

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent experience required

  • 10+ years of related experience required. Will consider candidate at the Senior Accounting Analyst level (at least 8 years of experience)

  • CPA or other applicable certifications strongly preferred

  • Must have excellent communication and collaboration skills

  • Must demonstrate the ability to inspire change, informally lead to get results, and find opportunities for process improvements

  • Experience in financial statement or operational auditing at a management or senior level or above preferred

  • Knowledge of U.S. GAAP and Statutory (for insurance companies) accounting and reporting requirements is desired

  • Ability to document processes, risks, and controls and develop a control testing plan. Should possess a basic understanding of IT controls

  • Have a basic understanding of the disclosure and internal control reporting requirements of Sections 302 and 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002

Responsibilities Accounting Functions - Center of Excellence * Provides accurate and complete financial data in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and UnityPoint Health financial policies. * Provides oversight of the preparation of and analytical review of financial statements for regional affiliates. * Analyzes and reviews monthly financial statements, articulates significant or unusual variances, and recommends corrective action based on analysis. * Leads the organization in hospital related accounting function, in directing, overseeing and monitoring and providing guidance to regional CFO and local governance. * In partnership with Ambulatory Director and Executive Director of Accounting Operations, leads the functional accounting teams through month-end, year-end closing activities and year-end audits with external accounting firm. * Maintains appropriate internal controls to detect or prevent significant errors and irregularities to ensure the safeguarding of assets and accurate financial reporting. * Maintains a strong focus on process improvement opportunities and leads projects to increase the efficiency and/or effectiveness of the department. * Responsible for research and documentation of proper accounting treatment for major transactions. * Works directly with Executive Director to exercise the overall vision and goals of the department. * Performs special projects as requested by the Executive Director of Finance. * Maintains a universal, system-wide, cross-continuum perspective. * Maintains a strong, collaborative relationship and provide clear communication with regional finance teams. * Works collaboratively throughout the organization to create, influence and gain cooperation to support strategic initiatives.
