The Assistant Director, Utility Plant directs the day-to-day operations of the Lausche Heating Plant (including satellite boiler plants), the West Chilled Water Plant, and the Tunnel Shop.

  • Safety: Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions related to steam and chilled water plant operations is essential. Safely maintain essential services - 24/7 /365 of 120 PSI high-pressure steam and 20 PSI low-pressure steam to campus for heating, cooling, process, and domestic hot water. Provide chilled water to campus for cooling during cooling season. A clear understanding of all plant equipment is necessary to safely provide essential services. Maintain and expand safety training for staff. Maintain lock out tag out records;

  • Ensures productivity of staff with broad discretion to schedule employees for efficacy as related to assigned work;

  • Accountable for evaluating, training, performance management, coaching, mentoring, and technical expertise of employees;

  • Manages and maintains records and data entry related to payroll for assigned employees;

  • Coordinates the acquisition of supplies and materials to complete work activities via shop stock, warehouse, storeroom, and/or local suppliers;

  • This is highly skilled supervisory position in the operation, repair, and maintenance of the central steam plant, central chilled water plant, related operating machinery, and in the project supervision of maintenance shop personnel;

  • This individual is responsible for applying technical mechanical skills and knowledge to a variety of central plant problems, with emphasis placed on supervising technicians in the operation and repair of the gas/oil-fired boilers, a steam turbine chiller, electric chillers, and ancillary equipment;

  • Management of various difficult tasks such as diagnosing complex equipment malfunctions and the procurement of parts; Work involves limited design responsibilities, preparation of routine reports, maintenance of routine records, and giving guidance regarding work methods and techniques; Assignments are received in the form of oral and written instructions, penciled layouts, blueprints, sketches, and from working or broken parts. Technical judgment and discretion is used in making decisions; Work is performed with considerable independence under the general direction from the director of utilities and is reviewed through efficient equipment operation, discussions, reports, and inspections;

  • Performs related work as required; Complies with all laws, University policies and procedures, safety regulations, and Collective Bargaining agreement;

  • Represent Facility Management's interests in building and utility infrastructure matters with senior administrators, faculty, union officials, governmental officials, regulators, contractors, architects, engineers, project managers, energy purveyors, and others;

  • Develop shop work and safety rules specific to area supervised and assist in the development of departmental policies and procedures;

  • Assist and cooperate/team with other members of the Facilities Management and the University as needed;

  • Perform other duties as assigned by higher-level management and serve as duty officer/technical support on a scheduled basis to handle after-hour emergency situations;

  • Inspects facilities for needed maintenance work, reviews work orders, takes customer complaints, and other requests for service with the goal of providing quality customer service campus-wide;

  • Display leadership that results in teamwork, customer focus, innovation, and continuous process improvement within their organization;

Primary Accountabilities:

  • Maintenance/Repair. Lead a maintenance crew to perform maintenance and repairs to plant equipment and tunnel infrastructure. Track and document repairs, parts, tools, materials, and labor for projects. Expand preventative maintenance program utilizing CMMS. Assist in leading annual steam shutdowns. Maintain stock of essential tools, parts, supplies, and materials for critical components.

  • Energy Efficiency. Analyze logs, and other records pertaining to the steam/chilled water plants operations to determine efficiency, loading conditions, and general operating conditions. Direct preventative maintenance and overhaul programs for the plants. Administer water treatment programs used by the plant.

  • Leadership. This position leads stationary engineers covering 24-hour operation, a maintenance/relief crew, water treatment, apprentices, and observers. It is expected that the workload for this team is appropriate, verified, consistent, and effective. Leader will plan assignments, schedule, and supervise the shift while remaining "on call" for the more difficult and complex tasks or emergencies.

  • Record Keeping. The plant manager must verify that all appropriate logs are maintained. Energy usage, service output, budgets, time off, inspections, maintenance, etc. Collect/record data used for maintaining and preparing environmental records and reports required by various state/federal agencies. Maintain purchasing records and participate in budget decisions.

Successful candidate will be expected to be proficient working with computers with a focus on CMMS and MS Office Suite.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree, or vocational or technical school degree.

  • 8+ years of work-related experience.

  • 6 years of management/supervisory experience.

  • Manager must have or obtain Ohio Stationary Steam Engineer Ohio License within 1 year of employment

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Valid continental US drivers license.

  • Current Ohio Stationary Steam Engineer License

Department VP For Finance and Administration Pay Rate

The full salary range for this position is $68,299 up to $117,127. The target salary range for this posting is $68,299 to $92,205 commensurate with the selected candidate's education and experience while considering internal equity.
