The State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz welcomes applications for the role of Assistant Director of Study Abroad in the Center for International Programs (CIP) to join a highly professional team committed to international educational exchange and serving students. CIP encompasses study abroad, dual diploma programs, international students and scholars services, English as a Second Language, and international internship programs based in New York City. The study abroad staff manage 50 programs in 20 countries that provide study abroad opportunities to over 300 students each year. SUNY New Paltz has been recognized as a 20-year top producer of Gilman Scholars and was the top producer of Fulbright Scholars among Master's institutions for the 2021-22 academic year. SUNY New Paltz has also received recognition for increasing access to study abroad opportunities for underrepresented students in higher education by the Institute for International Education with the 2015 Andrew Heiskell Award.

The Assistant Director for Study Abroad at the Center for International Programs is a full-time, 12-month position with full benefits and reports to the Director of Global Learning. Duties for this role include but are not limited to:

  • Advise and support studying abroad through the Center for International Programs

  • Contribute to strategic initiatives for study abroad and global learning

  • Oversee administration of study abroad scholarships

  • Coordinate the Global Engagement Program in New York City

  • Coordinate recruitment and manage assigned study abroad programs in terms of: day-to-day administration; application review and notifications; communication with students, parents, other campus units, faculty, and overseas partner institutions; and maintaining up-to-date program information

  • Liaise with various campus offices in support of students preparing to study abroad

  • Contribute to faculty-led program development efforts

  • Serve as the Fulbright Program Advisor for SUNY New Paltz

  • Represent SUNY New Paltz at other SUNY institution study abroad fairs

  • Serve as the study abroad health and safety coordinator

  • Assist in the planning and execution of study abroad events such as the Study Abroad Fair, Pre-departure Orientation, re-entry programming, etc. - some of these events may take place in the evening or on weekends

  • Monitor emergency phone and responds appropriately to study abroad student emergencies

  • Contribute to other projects, efforts, and initiatives of the Center for International Programs

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization

  • At least three years of directly related professional experience

  • Previous experience advising college or university students

  • Knowledge of study abroad health, safety, and risk management best practices

  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the field of International Education

  • Experience living abroad, studying abroad, or a significant intercultural experience

  • Ability and willingness to occasionally travel for professional conferences or to represent SUNY New Paltz at other SUNY campuses (valid driver's license required), as well as work evenings and weekends

  • Applicants must address in their applications their ability to work with a culturally diverse population

  • Strong technology skills with MS Office, wikis, videoconferencing, social media, etc.

Preferred:

  • A Master's degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization, w in student affairs, higher education, or international education

  • At least five years of directly related professional experience

  • Foreign language ability, especially in a language taught at SUNY New Paltz

  • Prior experience managing study abroad programs, including faculty-led programs

  • Prior experience working with diverse students as demonstrated by collaboration with opportunity programs and/or other relevant units on a college campus as well as successful scholarship advising

  • Engagement in professional organizations such as NAFSA, Forum on Education Abroad, and Diversity Abroad Network

  • Familiarity with study abroad data and application managements systems, especially Terra Dotta software

  • Experience advising students for national-level scholarships such as Gilman, Boren, Fulbright, and Critical Language Scholarships
