Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Student Transitions and Family Programs, the Assistant Director provides leadership and strategy development for transition programs: first-year and sophomore experiences as well as transfer, exchange, and gap year students. This individual provides advocacy for orientation and transition programs and meets the needs of undergraduate students and partners with academic division student services, Campus Life, Residential Life, Admissions & Aid, Center for Diversity & Inclusion, Athletics, Scholar Programs, Taylor Family Center for Student Success, and the Office for International Students & Scholars to enhance and improve on programs and events.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Implement, manage, and oversee curriculum development for high-impact initiatives, programs, and events for families of undergraduate students.

  • Event scope includes 100 to 4,000 participants ranging in scope from one hour to three days.

  • Responsible for interacting and developing partnerships with other departments and work units in order to attain department goals and objectives.(e.g. academic division student services, Campus Life, Residential Life, Center for Diversity & Inclusion, Athletics, Scholar Programs, Taylor Family Center for Student Success, Office for International Students and Scholars).

  • Coordinate the planning and implementation of orientation and transition programs including, but not limited to: Get Your Bearings online, Fall Welcome, Winter Welcome, first-year experience programming, sophomore experience programming liaising with more than 30 campus partners including Danforth Campus graduate and professional programs.

  • Develop content for communications for first-year students including, but not limited to: student transitions website, Bear Essentials for New Students, New Bearings for Transfer Students, Exchange Student Guidebook, monthly newsletters, social media groups.

  • Work with the Director to develop the Fall Welcome, Transfer & Exchange Welcome, and Winter Welcome schedules serving as a liaison to student affairs partners.

  • Work with the Director to craft the small group curriculum for Fall Welcome, Transfer & Exchange Welcome, and Winter Welcome.

  • Support the logistics, operations, and implementation of first-year events and programs including but not limited to: major events such as: Fall Welcome: transfer, exchange, and gap year programming; Winter Welcome; First Day; Symphony on the South 40; Classroom Connections; First-Year Finale; Halfway to Graduation; gap year programming; academic year programming: national transfer week, capstone event for exchange students.

  • Support the implementation of the first-year and sophomore experience learning outcomes.

  • Analyze data from program evaluations and makes recommendations for program improvements.

Supervise staff and student employees

  • Directly supervises up to two full-time staff members, one graduate fellow; indirectly supervise 100+undergraduate student employees.

  • Create employee performance management plans that include goal setting, evaluation of role responsibilities, and personal/professional development.

  • Manage student employee contracts.

  • Plan and coordinate a centralized recruitment, selection, onboarding, and evaluation process of undergraduate student employees in the department.

  • Plan and implement a centralized recruitment, selection, onboarding, and evaluation process of graduate staff including practicum students and graduate employees in the department.

  • Serve as a liaison to campus partners who also support student leaders associated with student transitions including Fall Welcome (e.g. Taylor Family Center for Student Success, Scholar Programs, and Beyond Boundaries peer mentors).

Develop student leader curriculum

  • Create and implement a comprehensive student leadership and training program for 100+ student employees. Training includes over 100 contact hours for the student employees.

  • Serve as the lead facilitator/instructor for training.

Identify and implement interventions for "at-risk" students

  • Working with the Director and campus partners, identify students who have not met the pre-matriculation and/or first-year learning outcomes. Collaborate with campus partners on interventions to support these students.

Organize the departmental assessment efforts,

Perform other duties as assigned, including representing unit in university-wide initiatives on behalf of supervisor.

Working Conditions

  • This person must be able to travel three to five times per calendar year off-campus, overnight for student leadership retreats and professional development opportunities.

  • The ability to be on-call and work nights and weekends is required more than 30 days/year during special events including, but not limited to; student leadership trainings and retreats, Fall Welcome, Transfer & Exchange Welcome, Winter Welcome, and Parent & Family Weekend.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, or related field.

  • Three to five years of professional experience working in a university setting.

  • Knowledge of student development theory and demonstrated application developing and implementing student staff training.

  • Comprehension of current issues related to transition issues, student engagement, and student development.

  • Demonstrated experience in assessment and program evaluation.

  • Demonstrated experience supervising undergraduate and graduate-level student staff.

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of orientation, retention and transition programs and services on a college campus, including advising and working with college students in a professional capacity.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite Package (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, Outlook).

  • Comfort with utilizing new technologies as appropriate (Box, Wordpress/Formidable, Google Forms).

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including but not limited to, editing and copywriting, public speaking, and group facilitation.

  • Event planning.

  • Customer service.

  • Demonstrated success in working with diverse populations.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and three years' professional experience in higher education or similar field. Some positions may require a master's degree.

Salary Range

$52,000.00 - $88,800.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
