The Assistant Director of Student Accessibility Services (SAS) promotes inclusion and access by providing a range of advising and support for students with disabilities and their faculty and by representing SAS in a variety of educational, committee, and other service capacities. The Assistant Director is a critical role that supports the College in fulfilling its responsibilities under disability-related civil rights and related laws and ensures that students receive reasonable disability-related services, academic accommodations, and program modifications to achieve equal opportunity in the College's programs, services, and activities. The Assistant Director also promotes students' intellectual and personal growth, consistent with the mission of the College, and administers College policies and procedures.

Description Required Qualifications

  • Education and Yrs Exp Masters plus 3-5 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience Required Qualifications

  • Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Master's degree in education, counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field.

  • At least 3 years working with students with disabilities in an educational setting.

  • Experience interpreting disability documentation and determining reasonable academic adjustments and services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of experience working in a higher education accessibility service setting.

  • Experience with teaching, curriculum development, and student programming.

  • Experience working with parents and at-risk students.

  • Expertise with interpreting a range of disability documentation (including neuropsychological evaluations), understanding and applying the ADAAA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and relevant case law; and determining reasonable academic adjustments and services.

Student Accommodations

  • 50%
  • Independently works with students and faculty via the interactive process, incorporating careful analysis of confidential disability documentation (such as medical records, psychological evaluations, neuropsychological reports, Individualized Education Programs, and Section 504 Plans) and relevant legal guidance to determine reasonable academic accommodations, auxiliary services, and other aids and innovative solutions that do not fundamentally alter programs of study.

  • Directs students and faculty in their utilization of the central accommodations database to ensure clear, timely communication, and receipt of accommodations and services.

  • Consults with on- and off-campus medical and mental health professionals regarding documentation and partners with Student Affairs departments such as the Undergraduate Deans' Office, Student Wellness Center, Residential Life, Dartmouth Dining Services, Office of Pluralism and Leadership, the First-Generation Office, and others to ensure students' equal access to Dartmouth curricular and co-curricular activities.

Percentage Of Time 50% Description

Student Advising, Recordkeeping, and Outreach- 35%

  • Provides ongoing counsel to a caseload of students to support them in better understanding the nexus of their disabilities and their Dartmouth experience; to problem-solve and potentially refine strategies, assistive technologies, and/or accommodations; to connect them with relevant on- and off-campus resources; and to foster autonomy.

  • Employs knowledge of Dartmouth policies and procedures and expertise of student development, functional impacts of disabilities, metacognition, and learning strategies to advise/coach students throughout the term.

  • Maintains detailed records and communicates regularly regarding interactions with students, faculty, the Undergraduate Deans' Office, Case Management, the College Health Service and Counseling Center, private providers, and other relevant parties.

  • Collaborates with parents, faculty, and staff to support SAS students and their learning and development.

Percentage Of Time 35% Description

Serving as SAS Representative

  • 15%
  • Participates in divisional projects and serves on campus committees that contribute to an equitable, inclusive Dartmouth College environment for individuals with disabilities.

  • Serves as subject matter expert and presenter for campus partners around students' learning, their range of disabilities, stigma and disability culture, and reasonable accommodations and services, developing and delivering on-campus educational programming.

  • Serves as a liaison to student groups and recognized organizations that focus on accessibility and other domains of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
