The Special Education Department supports site personnel in addressing the needs of students with disabilities at all of the schools in the District. With 12% of SMMUSD students qualifying for special education programs and/or services, the District has a continuum of placement options to meet the individual needs of students through their Individualized Educational Program (IEP). Staff ensures that the range of human diversity is embraced and the rights of equity and access are guaranteed.
Individuals are educated in general education or natural environment to the maximum extent possible. Department priorities include: students' unique instructional needs will be identified; students will be served by fully-qualified personnel; students with disabilities will be successfully integrated with non-disabled peers; students with disabilities will meet high standards for academic and non-academic skills; and students with disabilities will successfully participate in preparation for the workplace and independent living. The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District partners with Culver City and Beverly Hills school districts to form the Tri-City SELPA.
Located in the scenic, sea-side communities of Santa Monica and Malibu, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is a preK-12 school district serving approximately 8,835 students. SMMUSD is a diverse community dedicated to extraordinary achievement for all while simultaneously closing the achievement and access gap, and committed to pursuing excellence through equity. Current priorities include social justice standards, restorative justice, project-based learning, innovative teaching and a high level of student engagement.
Our schools are supported by involved parents and communities. The District has nine elementary schools, three middle schools, one alternative school (K-8), two high schools, one continuation high school, child development services and adult education programs
