Position Summary:
The Assistant Director of Recreation Facilities and Operations plays a pivotal role in fostering a vibrant and inclusive community within the Student Life Center (SLC) at Fort Lewis College. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead and support our diverse student staff while ensuring the seamless operation of our recreational facilities and outdoor activity spaces.
Job Description:
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Facility Operations (45%)
Lead facility scheduling and billing for Recreational Services' spaces with a focus on health and wellbeing and social engagement, including inclusivity and accessibility.
Collaborate with vendors to maintain high-quality exercise equipment, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all users.
Foster a supportive environment by recruiting, training, and mentoring student staff for facility maintenance.
Coordinate maintenance and repairs for the SLC and outdoor recreational spaces, prioritizing safety and sustainability.
Champion safety initiatives by providing comprehensive training, including CPR/AED certification, for our dedicated student team.
Provide supervision and support for custodial staff.
Contribute to the development and management of the SLC operating budget with an emphasis on resource optimization and efficiency.
Facility Supervision (45%)
Cultivate an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere by recruiting, training, and scheduling student staff for open recreation activities and special events.
Offer mentorship and guidance to student personnel, empowering them to excel in their roles.
Collaborate on the development and revision of facility policies, ensuring they reflect safety for users and our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Coordinate open recreation opportunities that cater to the diverse interests and needs of our student, faculty, and staff community.
Assist in managing the SLC student personnel budget, prioritizing investments that enhance the student experience.
Coordinate the management of special events, ensuring seamless execution and attendee satisfaction.
Administration (10%)
Contribute to a comprehensive marketing strategy that celebrates the diversity of recreational opportunities available at Fort Lewis College.
Develop annual goals with measurable evaluation metrics to track progress and drive continuous improvement.
Manage membership offerings and databases for the SLC and departmental lockers, prioritizing accessibility and convenience.
Demonstrate exceptional communication and customer service skills when engaging with our diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and guests.
Exhibit a steadfast commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, fostering a culture of belonging within our community.
Maintain knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508.
Produce and remediate digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation, physical education, leisure studies or a related field
Minimum of two years of full-time experience working with facility management, supervising and/or coordinating activity space such as gymnasium, running track, weight room and cardio areas
Knowledge of general facility supervision; including staff scheduling and training.
Knowledge of basic safety and risk management practices and industry standards as they relate to facility operation and supervision.
Demonstrated supervisory experience.
Demonstrated training experience.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated proficiency with written communication skills.
A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
Current CPR, First Aid and AED instructor certifications (or willing to obtain).
Preferred Education, Specialized Skills and Experience:
Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in recreation, physical education, leisure studies or a related field.
Experience working in a collegiate setting with direct supervision of student staff.
Experience using Microsoft Office products, such as Microsoft Teams, Outlook and Excel.
Demonstrated experience with management software (such as Blackboard, FourWinds; Live25, EMS; Active/Class; WordPress; When-to-Work; e-Campus).
Demonstrated experience with special event planning and student leadership programming.
Demonstrated experience with Student Learning Outcomes and Assessments.
Demonstrated marketing experience.
Current CPR, First Aid and AED instructor (or willing to obtain).
National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) membership.
Reports To / Supervisory Responsibility:
This position reports to the Director of Recreational Services.
This position supervises a Custodian I.
This position supervises student employees.

Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others via the phone, at meetings and in outdoor settings.
Ability to use and operate utility vehicles.

Typical work hours are Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm but certain events and trips will also require working during the evenings, weekends and over holiday periods.
Salary range is $54,000 to $60,000
Compensation
The salary range is $54,000 to $60,000, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
