Job Overview

The Assistant Director of People & Culture is responsible for operating in all human resources functions including learning and development, employee database maintenance, culture and colleague relations, payroll and benefits, talent acquisition, performance management, and onboarding and offboarding. particular facets of P&C processes such as recruitment, onboarding, and training. This position reports to the Director of People & Culture.

The Assistant Director acts as the client-facing partner to the management and colleague population of the hotel operation and support departments. This role provides expertise and direct support in the areas of colleague relations, performance management, and organizational development.

The Assistant Human Resources Director will be the primary point of contact to the assigned internal client base for assistance with human resources policies, procedures and programs.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Partner with departments to communicate human resources policies, procedures, programs and laws.

  • Identify and effectively handle employee relations issues and organizational development issues.

  • Conduct internal investigations, respond to employee complaints in collaboration with site management, and provide a resolution plan to address employee complaints/concerns.

  • Determine and recommend employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship and promote a high level of employee morale and motivation.

  • Review the recommendations from management, assist and monitor the implementation of performance improvement plans and other corrective actions for under-performing employees.

  • Build and maintain knowledge of current HR related laws and practices, as well as internal policies/procedures, and provide suitable interpretation to management and employees.

  • Assist with HR-related education/training, communication, and awareness efforts. Support implementation and training for new HR programs, policies, and initiatives.

  • Monitor onboarding and orientation process while taking a leading role in welcoming new hires.

  • Assist in the recruitment process, such as posting job openings, sending offer letters, and onboarding activities.

  • Perform payroll functions to support the People & Culture Coordinator and Payroll Manager

  • Act as the primary custodian for colleague data management and records recovery for colleagues using ADP and internal platforms

  • Provide day to day performance management to managers (e.g. coaching, counseling, conflict resolution, career development, progressive discipline, separations, etc.)

  • Research and recommend potential technological solutions to enable people support

  • Handle colleague inquiries related to Proper policies and procedures, the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the Proper handbook

  • Works independently and within a team on special nonrecurring and/or ongoing projects. Acts as project manager for special projects at the request of the Director of People & Culture

  • Manage workers' compensation policy and procedures including but not limited to colleague medical treatment assistance, submitting claims and employment information, reviewing accommodations, managing leaves, etc.

  • Manage the leave of absence process for all leaves covered by federal and state laws, the Proper handbook and the Collective Bargaining Agreement

  • Compile and submit reports for various purposes related to People & Culture and compliance

Qualification Standards

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources management, business management, or related field and 5-7 years of Human Resources Generalist experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Human Resources Certification(s) preferred

Full-scope HR Generalist experience. This position has a heavy emphasis in Employee Relations activities. Candidates must have at least 3 years of experience in working directly with employees and supervisors during investigations, providing recommendations, and problemsolving around employee issues.

Experience working with and implementing HR Information systems and other system platforms related to HR

Familiarity with payroll

Experience in hospitality industry preferred

Experience working in union environment preferred

Working knowledge of federal, state (California), and local laws (Los Angeles / Santa Monica)

Skills

Ability to speak and translate English and Spanish

Excellent written, verbal and social communication skills
