PAY: $60,000 annual salary (100%-time professional staff appointment with benefits).

WORK ARRANGMENT: This position is eligible for hybrid work (80% on-site and 20% remote) within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. From mid-May to the start of fall classes, the position may require up to 100% on-site work, with as much flexibility as the unit can offer depending on program needs. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

Orientation Services is seeking an Assistant Director to oversee CSI:1600 Success at Iowa and to support our transition programs for entering first-year and transfer students.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Coordinate and teach CSI:1600 Success at Iowa, the online transition course required for all new first-year and transfer students entering the University of Iowa each fall and spring semester.

  • Serve as the instructor of record; plan, coordinate and teach the course. Submit midterm notices and final grades. Use Canvas for all course content.

  • Oversee all communication with students about the course. Respond to student inquiries, provide individual guidance, and troubleshoot technology issues.

  • Chair the Success at Iowa Steering Committee, which provides oversite for the course. Provide the Steering Committee with timely reports on course completion and student feedback and make recommendations based on that information.

  • Provide project management on all course content within the context of the overall course and learning outcomes.

  • Partner with Distance and Online Education (DOE) to create video-based content that is accessible, engaging, and meaningful for students.

  • Work with ITS and outside vendors to integrate vended content into the course, troubleshoot issues, and provide students with a seamless online course experience.

  • Design course graphics that creatively display key messages within brand standards.

  • Collaborate with campus partners, including the Academic Advising Center and Intercollegiate Athletics to promote the successful completion of course content by students.

  • Provide training on systems and processes to student staff, advisors, and campus partners as necessary.

  • Analyze assessment data and prepare reports to help inform decision-making about the course and other transition programming in collaboration with the Orientation Services Team.

Other Areas of Responsibility:

  • Serve as part of the Orientation Services team.

  • Assist with planning and executing additional orientation programming, which includes Student Online Advising and Registration (SOAR), Becoming a Hawkeye (BAH) program days, and On Iowa! welcome weeks.

  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising graduate interns and student staff as necessary.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience (minimum of one year) in college teaching or direct student contact at the undergraduate level.

  • Experience in creating engaging instructional content.

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Proven ability to effectively meet deadlines to effectively manage projects.

  • Experience working in a team-based setting where consultation, flexibility, and collaboration are essential.

  • Demonstrated ability to support a welcoming and respectful environment in a job-related experience, an academic setting, and/or the community.

  • Knowledge of and experience working with online course management systems (ex. Canvas) and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Highly skilled in content and design software (ex. Adobe, Canva, Photoshop, Pressbooks).

  • Experience with planning and implementing events.

  • Familiarity with University of Iowa policies, procedures, and regulations.
