Department StatementColgate University, a premier liberal arts university of approximately 3,100 students, seeks an energetic, motivated, and highly visible Assistant Director of the Office of Student Involvement to serve as a trusted resource for students on co-curricular involvement.

Positioned within the Dean of the College division and reporting directly to the Director of the Office of Student Involvement, the assistant director takes an active role in the holistic development of students. The office’s mission is to provide engaging, dynamic, and inclusive co-curricular and extracurricular opportunities that empower students to build community, discover their strengths, and pursue their interests. The office uses a comprehensive advising approach to support, educate, and develop diverse, well-rounded student leaders to explore and engage with co-curricular involvement as part of their Colgate education.

The assistant director supports the director in promoting co-curricular experiences through student involvement and programming as part of the student engagement team (ALANA Cultural Center, Max A. Shacknai Center for Outreach, volunteerism, and Education, Office of the Chaplains, Office of Fraternity and Sorority Advising, Office of LGBTQ Initiatives). The assistant director provides management and support for specific programs and services associated with the Office of Student Involvement. The assistant director is responsible for supporting the direction of the department and strong student activities and late night program informed by Colgate University’s Third Century Plan and the Dean of the College division priorities.

This position supervises the part-time late-night coordinator and some student staff within the Office of Student Involvement. AccountabilitiesAdvising and Student Organization Support Serve as the primary advisor for the programming board (Student Activities Association) and class councils, assisting with any relevant training, selection, programming, and ongoing initiatives. Meet regularly with each programming committee to develop a diverse offering of programs that vary in size, scope, venue, and target audience. Encourage opportunities for collaboration with student leaders, student organizations, and University departments.

Advise and consult with assigned student organization officers regarding programming initiatives and activities, travel, and organizational growth and development. Provide financial counseling, resources, and expertise in guiding the continual evolution and transition of student leadership and organizational projects. Coordinate the annual registration process for student organizations, including maintaining officers’ contact information and other materials including membership rosters, constitutions, and other organizational documents.

Lead curriculum development, planning, and facilitation of training programs and resources for student leaders and advisers. Program and Event Management In collaboration with the Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for assessing students’ social programming needs, identifying leadership opportunities that support other divisional efforts in leadership development, and designing and implementing a variety of intellectual, social, recreational, and developmental programs. Lead the development, planning, and coordination of University-wide programs for students, including late-night programming and traditions.

Oversee late-night programming to complement events planned by the programming board (SAA), supervising the Late Night Coordinator and student staff to develop a robust programming calendar that enhances the use of Donovan’s Pub and other campus spaces. Build partnerships and collaborations across campus to provide campus-wide programs and events designed to build community, promote leadership, and foster engagement and retention. Assist with the development, implementation, and assessment of large, annual events for the campus community involving students, staff, faculty, and alumni.

These may include a New Student Orientation, Welcome Week Events, Homecoming, Springfest weekend, Dancefest, and other student and staff-initiated University-wide events. May serve as primary event staff person and oversee coordination of all logistics with Facility Services, Campus Safety, etc. Develop familiarity and understanding of the physical designs of each indoor and outdoor event space where programs are executed.

First-Year Experience and Residential Commons Collaborate with the Assistant Director for Orientation to promote involvement opportunities for first-year students, develop and implement a comprehensive transition schedule focusing on the first six weeks (especially Welcome Weeks), and select and train the Orientation Link Student Staff. Work collaboratively with the Residential Life and Commons staff to complement or enhance Residential Commons programming with student programming initiatives. Marketing and Branding Create and maintain a comprehensive mechanism for managing the OSI brand across all marketing platforms, including the departmental website, student organization management system, and social media outlets, ensuring consistency with institutional priorities.

Collaborate with the Director on a marketing strategy to effectively use the student organization management system for developing forms, promoting events, and recording the history of student organizations while maintaining the departmental website and social media platforms. Assessment and Finance Institute strategic measures to ensure financial responsibility is accomplished among the student organizations. Coordinate assessments to measure the effectiveness of initiatives and programs.

Support collection of data and develop and implement program assessment plans to evaluate student learning outcomes and student satisfaction. Additional Responsibilities Process financial payments and reports for all assigned areas of fiduciary responsibility. Review and execute performance and service contracts in conjunction with the Director of the Office of Student Involvement.

Plan and execute department-wide recognition events, professional development workshops, and initiatives for the student leaders throughout the year. Prepare reports and provide research as assigned. Participate in department-wide planning of programs and initiatives and collaborate with others to ensure high-quality events and services to students.

Support the work of the Office of Student Involvement through committees, task forces, and special assignments. Work in concert with other staff to ensure a high level of quality service to students, staff, and guests. Write reports, provide research, and complete projects as assigned by the Director.

Regular evening and weekend work is required.

Assist with maintaining the O’Connor Campus Center (The Coop), Hall of Presidents, Donovan’s Pub, The Mat at Parker Commons, and student organization offices and storage by arranging repairs, updates, and upgrades as necessary. May be required to travel with student organizations as necessary Other duties as assigned.

This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), in accordance with the federal statutory requirements of the Jeanne Clery Act. Requirements Professional Experience/ QualificationsPrior experience developing and running student-oriented events within the context of higher education such as orientation, concerts, dance festivals, and philanthropic activities. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively engage students on issues of diversity with the ability to be a strong advocate for diversity in working with diverse populations and experience engaging various constituencies across differences of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, class, and spiritual backgrounds.
