The Assistant Director serves as a member of the leadership team in the Office of International Services, contributing to policy development and strategic planning for the department. The primary areas of focus for this position are technology coordination and data management.
The successful candidate will have significant international education experience working in a fast-paced office environment, and will possess strong communication, organizational, and supervisory skills. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate prior experience leading projects related to implementation of technology aimed at improving efficiency and effectiveness of work tasks, managing complex data projects, and using new communication tools to reach large audiences. The strongest candidates will also have extensive experience assessing needs and developing programs, activities and resources to serve a diverse international population. Significant knowledge of immigration rules and practices related to international education (specifically pertaining to F-1 and J-1 students/scholars) is expected.
Responsible for overall data management strategy for department, including workflow assessment, records management, and internal/external reporting.
Oversees compliance related reporting functions of the department.
Coordinates development of new technology tools (webinars, multimedia resources, web and mobile applications) intended to better serve USC's international population.
Leads assessment and analysis of technology needs for the office, including hardware and software.
Manages major long-term projects, including implementation of new software tools with office-wide impact.
Supervises professional staff responsible for SEVIS data management and new student check-in process. Additional supervision of staff and other functional areas of the office may be assigned based on operational needs.
Maintains liaison relationship with key campus partners, including admission, registrar, and academic unit leadership to ensure OIS works effectively with university partners, as well as to coordinate collection of data required for managing F-1 recertification, I-17 update process, J-1 redesignation, and other required reporting processes.
Serves as an expert on F-1/J-1 immigration matters, representing the department with U.S. immigration agencies and university partners to resolve complex issues related to immigration regulations and institutional policy.
Conducts presentations, trainings, and workshops for various audiences on topics related to international education, immigration policies and procedures, and other issues based on assessment of the needs of diverse stakeholder groups.
Counsels international students and/or scholars on personal, financial, academic, social, and immigration matters.
Maintains currency with appropriate immigration rules and practices impacting the work of the department. Coordinates development of resources for departmental staff and university colleagues to share essential information with key partners.
Serve as a Designated School Official (F-1) and Alternate Responsible Officer (J-1).
Contributes to departmental assessment strategy in cooperation with other members of the OIS leadership team.
Advising and management experience within higher education setting, including supervision of professional staff
Experience working with an international student population
Cross-cultural communication skills and experience
Prior experience successfully leading projects focused on use of technology in a higher education context
Experience developing multimedia communication projects, including videos, webinars, and other training tools
Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
Field of Expertise-
Advanced degree in international education, student personnel administration, education, counseling, or related field
