Summary:

The Student Transportation Services Assistant Director is responsible for supporting the district's student transportation department operations. Responds promptly and courteously to community, school/department and external partner questions and concerns, assists with the development, planning, implementation and monitoring of school bus routes and safe transportation of children to and from school and school activities within established regulations and guidelines.

The Student Transportation Services Assistant Director is a key component of the department incident/emergency response team and will assume general oversight of the Transportation Department in the absence of the Director, under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responds quickly, verbally and in writing, to a high volume of inquiries relative to division programs and services, including routing concerns, safety, and security issues at bus stops or on bus routes, requests for review of bus video, etc.

  • Advises patrons regarding division programs and services following evaluation of each inquiry, requisite information gathering, and responds or makes referrals with sensitivity towards the circumstances of each individual requesting assistance.

  • Establishes and maintains control records on incoming correspondence including follow-up action taken or additional action required.

  • Compiles pertinent data to prepare various required state and local reports.

  • Maintain or support maintenance of physical and/or computerized departmental files on transportation issues, including bus incident reports, trip forms, collision/injury reports, and driver records.

  • Assists with establishing and monitoring bus routes for all programs and evaluates requested or needed adjustments as necessary, field tests schedules and routes.

  • Assists with riding bus routes with trouble spots and conducts a fair and sensitive review of situations reported by drivers or management. Makes recommendations for adjustments or assists with referrals as needed.

  • Provides evaluative support of drivers to Director as needed by riding bus routes and providing feedback.

  • Reviews, analyzes, and responds to student discipline referrals from school bus drivers or schools/departments. Participates, as needed or requested, in parent/student conferences regarding transportation concerns or safety issues.

  • Assists with adverse weather plans, routes, and condition analysis.

  • Structures and attends in-service or other transportation training to provide content and promote teamwork.

  • Assumes operational leadership in the absence of the Director under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent for Business & Operations.

  • Works with Human Resource department for recruitment, interviewing, hiring recommendations for Transportation Services department.

  • Conduct probationary and annual evaluations of classified employees of the Transportation Services department.

  • Promotes a productive environment for transportation staff and students by recognizing and solving problems and encouraging teamwork, creativity, and understanding.

  • Supports and maintains good communication with the community at large regarding school bus transportation issues.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking and 25% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment, and in varying atmospheric conditions. Work environments during outreach events may include businesses, school districts, and industry worksites.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma required;

  • Four (4) years' experience in student transportation operations preferred. A college degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and transportation operations leadership experience are required;

  • Job related experience with demonstrated progressive levels of leadership responsibility is preferred;

  • Substantial experience with MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook) and other computer software programs;

  • Prior experience with student transportation routing software preferred.

  • Additional consideration will be given to candidates whose overall experience includes student transportation customer service experience.

Clearances:

  • Washington State Patrol and FBI Fingerprint Background Clearance.

Certificates:

  • Valid Washington State Driver's License required (must be able to fulfill all traveling requirements of this position, including possessing and maintaining a valid license and automobile insurance, when using a personal vehicle for District business).

  • First Aid and CPR Certification may be required after hiring.

  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with P&S Endorsement preferred.
