Job Title: Assistant Director of Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity & LGBTQ+ Coordinator

Status: Exempt, Full-time 12-month position

Wage: 740

Reports To: Director, Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity

Overview: The Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity works with offices throughout campus to ensure that Augustana's diverse and other underrepresented students are successful inside and outside of the classroom. In collaboration with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion staff and academic administration, assists in providing academic support, social programming, mentoring, and networking to the campus community with a focus on diverse and first generation students. The Assistant Director will also serve as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Plus (LGBTQ+) Coordinator.

Job Duties:

  • Plans, implements and evaluates programs and initiatives to create a welcoming environment for our diverse student body, including students of color and LGBTQIA+ students.

  • In collaboration with other offices, provides a range of campus-wide programs to increase awareness and meet the educational and social needs of diverse student populations.

  • Supports the college's retention efforts through individual interventions with students, as well as by participating in the overall retention plan at Augustana

  • Assists with the PACE (Preparation, Awareness, Community, Engagement) Multicultural Mentorship year-long program for first year students of color

  • Supervise designated student workers and provide robust performance feedback to ensure program goals and highest priority outcomes are achieved.

  • The Assistant Director will partner with the Director to serve as a resource for multicultural student organizations.

  • Serves as a campus-wide resource to assist in responding to harassment, insensitivity and bias related incidents.

  • Through individual outreach and participation, plan efforts to strengthen the relationship between the different ethnic communities in the Quad Cities and Augustana College with the overall goal of accessibility to the Quad City multicultural communities.

  • Cultivate professional relationships with faculty and staff in order to develop and implement multicultural programs and educational opportunities for students.

  • Coordinator of Safe Zone, a campus wide training program committed to making a safer, more welcoming and inclusive environment for members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Provide LGBTQ+ education and trainings to foster dialogue for an inclusive community

  • Be a standing member of the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program advisory board

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

Education and Experience:

Education: A master's degree in student affairs, ethnic studies, counseling or related fields is preferred. Bachelor's degree with equivalent related work experience may be considered.

Experience: Two or more years of demonstrated successful experience working with multicultural populations. Higher education experience, and fluency in Spanish is preferred.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

  • Commitment to and deep understanding of issues of diversity and inclusion in higher education, including access, equity and social justice is essential.

  • Expertise in and passion for working with students

  • Experience building a supportive community among students and peers

  • Affinity for working in a small college, residential, liberal arts environment.

  • Knowledge of best practices and trends related to multicultural affairs including African-American, Latinx, Asian, Indigenous, and LGBTQIA+ student populations

  • Ability to establish and maintain community partnerships and professional working relationships

  • Ability to develop, implement, and assess effectiveness of programs

  • Strong administrative skills including organization, budget management, student supervision, event planning, and follow up.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Products, social media, Canva, and web applications; knowledge of google suite

Travel: This position is located on the Augustana campus (Rock Island, Illinois) involves limited travel , transporting students to regional and national events and conferences. Must have a current valid driver's license and pass an MVR check.

Work Environment: This position has potential for flex hours and remote work in accordance with institutional policy.

Physical Requirements:

This position is located on campus and works in a traditional office environment. Must be able to lift 15 pounds on a frequent basis. Also required is the ability to listen, hear, speak, read, write, climb stairs, bend, stoop, and stand for intermittently long periods of time. Must be able to use a computer to accomplish a variety of job tasks.

Special Requirements: As key personnel representing the College to students, this position requires excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to relate to a diverse student body, and the ability and willingness to model the mission and high standard of behavior of Augustana College. This position has frequent work obligations that involve evening and weekend work. All potential employees must pass a criminal background check.
