SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of Student Success, the Assistant Director supports the vision, leadership, and oversight for all academic advising and student success processes and practices in support of retention and completion for the university.
JOB DUTIES:
● Support the development and implementation of the Student Success Center and its new programming/initiatives.
● Support Director of Student Success with promoting and integrating technology systems in support of University-wide advising and student retention.
● Support Director of Student Success with developing strategies using institutional data to meet goals and expectations of the University Strategic Plan.
● Interpret academic policies and procedures to recommend changes as needed.
● Provide guidance, and training to Peer Tutors to provide students with the support to be academically successful.
● Oversee Scholars mentorship grant-funded program
● Facilitate events and workshops across campus to educate on and promote academic coaching services.
● Manage a diverse caseload of approximately 150 undergraduate students to provide direct services to plan schedules, create and assess academic and career goals, connect to resources, academic coaching, and provide information pertinent to student success based on the individual's needs.
● Build relationships with students to guide their academic experience, ensure their academic success, and recommend and implement strategies for an evolving landscape of academic advising and student success.
● Adhere to a holistic, case-management model of academic advising and student success.
● Monitor student success through program participation, academic performance, campus engagement, retention, and career trajectory using university technology and fostering close relationships.
● Keep detailed notes on student interaction using the university's relevant technology.
● Create timely, consistent, responsive, and effective communication to students with information pertinent to their individual success.
● Collaborate with Admissions, Career Services, Disability Services, Housing, Financial Aid, and other departments to ensure students' needs are met.
● Other duties may be assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
● Master's degree required (preferred in fields of counseling, social work and/or higher education administration)
● 4+ years of academic advising experience
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
● Ability to collect, understand, analyze data/research and report data in ways that inform senior leaders for strategic decision making.
● Initiate and support strategic planning, goal-setting, and assessment efforts for the units of responsibility.
● Maintain involvement in professional organizations for ongoing professional development and knowledge of best practices.
● Experience with and current understanding of theoretical models, best practices, and contemporary issues in student development, effective practices supporting successful student support services and retention, and developing intra-institutional collaborative partnerships
● Excellent interpersonal skills; attention to detail and flexibility in problem-solving.
● Demonstrate an inclusive disposition, showing respect and appreciation for human differences (national origin, ethnicity, religious belief, culture, gender, disability, etc.).
● Proficient in using technology to support student success and daily functions (including, but not limited to: BannerWeb, Banner9, DegreeWorks, Slate, Argos, Windows, Outlook, Word, Excel, Google Apps, and the Internet). Be open to learning new technologies as required for continuous improvement.Knowledge and experience in academic and/or student success initiatives.
● Ability to work outside of normal business hours, on occasion
● Experience with diverse populations, and an understanding of the challenges facing first-generation college students and students from under-served backgrounds.
● Ability to exhibit leadership, initiative, enthusiasm, teamwork and collaboration with faculty, staff, administrators, and students.
