Job Title Assistant Director of Student Engagement for the Arts Summary

The Assistant Director of Student Engagement for the Arts oversees the creative and performance opportunities and education at John Carroll University (JCU). The primary purpose of this position is to enhance the creative and performing arts environment on campus for members of the John Carroll community. As a member of the Office of Student Engagement, the Assistant Director of Student Engagement for the Arts will also assist with the development and implementation of current and new campus programming and initiatives to enhance the overall student experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the availability and scheduling of creative and performing arts opportunities in a variety of performing arts fields, including theater and music, in collaboration with division and departmental leaders across the University.

  • Act as a liaison for University resources to support and, as needed, serve as an advisor for student organizations focused on theater, music, and visual arts.

  • Assist in the recruitment of students to participate in arts opportunities, including theater, music, and visual arts.

  • Recruit and hire external professional musicians who are contracted for special concerts and performances.

  • Ensure facilities, equipment and technology for performance and practice spaces including Kulas Auditorium and the Marinello Little theater are operational and functioning.

  • Facilitate student engagement with fine and performing arts in the greater Cleveland community.

  • Manage current Kulas Grant to attend Playhouse performances and seek out other grant and donor opportunities.

  • Serve as the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) liaison on the University Core Committee.

  • Lead a campus-wide working group on fine arts to collaborate with Academic Affairs and Student Experience and Belonging leaders and designees.

  • Teach a one-credit course related to the CAPA core requirement per semester.

  • Hire and manage adjunct instructors for applied music courses.

  • Supervise the Instructor of the Pep Band.

  • Develop and implement departmental goals and prepare assessment reports.

  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, departmental purchasing, and contracts for external performers.

  • Assist with other Student Engagement and University initiatives and duties as directed by supervisors.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree.

  • Two years of professional experience working with performing arts initiatives in a college environment.

  • Experience working with university-aged students with a broad range of arts appreciation

  • Experience collaborating with other music professionals and students

  • Willingness and ability to collaborate with faculty and staff across campus.

  • Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Fine Arts degree.

  • Experience in teaching in a performing arts field

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in creating or facilitating performing arts programs for a wide range of constituents.

Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions

This position works in person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. This is 10-month position, with work occurring August

  • May. Some summer hours may be required. 37.5 hours per week that generally performed during University core business hours of Monday through Friday 8:30 am

  • 5:00 pm. However this position will require schedule flexibility for work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on department operations.

Physical Requirements

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Hours Full Time FLSA Exempt (Salary) Compensation & Benefits

Starting salary will be $37,000 - $48,000, commensurate with qualifications.
