Northland College is seeking an assistant director of residential life. The assistant director of residential life (ADRL) is a twelve-month, live-in professional staff appointment and a key position within the Office of Residential Life and the Division of Student Affairs. The ADRL position is student-centered, focusing on creating passionate student leaders and healthy, inclusive communities. The ADRL will serve as the primary supervisor for twenty student staff in the Office of Residential Life, providing ongoing training and development to enhance the student experience and to promote growth, involvement in learning beyond the classroom, and engagement in campus life. Typical work will include: selection, training, and supervision of student staff; prospective and new student development; summer transition; student conduct; crisis and incident response; diversity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts; assessment; and participation as an active and collaborative member of the Office of Residential Life department and the Division of Student Affairs.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
Key Responsibilities
Student staff supervision (40%)
Selection and training of administrative resident advisors, resident advisors, and summer staffing
Active supervision with staff meetings, weekly one-on-ones, and ongoing training for staff member growth and development
Understanding of and accountability for the role of student staff members in in-hall community interaction initiatives (programming, personal interactions, etc.)
Community development and resident interaction (25%)
Creation of additional non-student-staff leadership opportunities and programs within the Office of Residential Life
Provide campus-wide programmatic support in collaboration with campus partners
Survey creation, data assessment, and tracking of residential campus involvement
Prospective and new student development (15%)
Collaboration with the Office of Admissions on tours, show room, marketing, and website updates
Implementation of first-year student and transfer student community engagement model in academic success and life skill development
Support Outdoor Orientation and Welcome Week initiatives, assisting in any programmatic needs
Summer transition (10%)
Hall closure responsibilities in collaboration with the maintenance and facilities team
Preparing summer hall for on-campus residents
Scheduling and planning for incoming summer groups seeking use of residential facilities
Policy enforcement and incident response (10%)
Adjudicate lower-level residential student policy violations in conjunction with the Office of Student Wellness
Serve in an on-call capacity
Mediation and response to students in crisis
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree
1-2 years of residential life community-development experience
Possess a valid driver's license, good driving record, and willingness to become a certified driver of campus vehicles
Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities
Crisis-management/on-call experience
Proven ability to be self-motivated with minimal supervision
Excellent written and oral communication
Capability to operate with a flexible schedule as needed during peak times
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in higher education, counseling, or related field
2-3 years of live-in residential life experience
Experience in orientation programs and first-year student transitions
Knowledge of retention methods for first-year to second-year students
Past supervision of undergraduate student staff
Experience with data collection and assessment
