Position Summary

The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Residence Life and is a full-time calendar year position. The Assistant Director provides leadership and strategic vision and is responsible for, the comprehensive development and management of a supportive living and learning environment grounded in student development theory and best practices that support the mission of Stonehill College. This individual devotes particular attention to the inclusive nature of the Stonehill community, fostering greater diversity within the staff and student body, as well as the greater breadth of thought across the institution. This position performs a variety of important daily operation tasks including supervision of professional staff, student housing assignments, housing operations, serving as a liaison to campus partners, and representing the department on divisional and college-wide committees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise 3-4 Residence Directors. Serve as a resource and role model for all Residence Directors and Graduate Assistants.

  • Coordinate all student housing assignments and notifications throughout the year, including summer housing, housing over break periods, and early arrivals/late stays.

  • Serve as a critical leader in fostering a campus culture in which differences are embraced, and work to advance the College's mission of diversity and inclusion.

  • Maintain accurate student housing files and records through database systems, as well as paper/non-computerized systems (Banner, Adirondack Housing Director, etc.).

  • Communicate with other offices (Student Financial Services, Academic Services, Career Services, International Programs, etc.) regarding changes in the housing statuses of students.

  • Design and manage the annual online housing lottery process for first-year, transfer, and returning students. Market and communicate appropriate information to students regarding these processes.

  • Coordinate room change processes throughout the year.

  • Manage key and card access control for students, residence life staff members, live-in staff members, etc.

  • Facilitate second-semester assignments for new students and returning students from abroad or internships.

  • Manage the online presence of the department and communicate information to internal and external audiences. Update and maintain the Residence Life website, the Residence Life channels on the myHill student portal, and various social media sites.

  • Prepare regular occupancy reports for internal departmental use, as well as for enrollment planning.

  • Oversee the Special Interest Housing program and ensure the completion of student outcomes for all interest areas. In addition, work with Academic Affairs to promote and develop current and future living-learning communities.

  • Serve as the primary liaison to and collaborate with departments that are critical to housing operations, including Facilities Management, Campus Police, Information Technology, and Purchasing and General Services.

  • Work with Facilities Management on damage assessment and the billing process for resident students who are billed by the College for damage.

  • Coordinate and distribute opening and closing information and checklists to staff and students.

  • Oversee regular health and safety inspections in the residence halls and ensure compliance with the Town of Easton's annual inspection report.

  • Assist the Director with the professional staff selection process.

  • Assist the Director in the annual budget planning process and identify budget priorities for future fiscal years.

  • Assist the Director in strategic planning and assessment and evaluation projects for the department.

  • Participate in the administrator on-call weekly rotation with the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, Director of Residence Life, and other administrators.

  • Assist Residence Directors and Resident Assistants with programming efforts. Provide topical programs in areas of personal expertise when requested for hall programming.

  • Attend all Residence Life trainings and staff developments.

  • Serve as a member of the Housing Accommodations Committee, Student Affairs Committee on Diversity, the Admissions Program Advisory Committee, and others as determined by the Director.

  • Serve as a student conduct hearing officer as needed by the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs.

  • Assist with additional duties, projects, programs, and committees as determined by the Director.

Education and/or Experience

A Master's degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, or a related field is required. Three to five years of full-time residence life experience is required including program development, supervision, and conflict management. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming community.

  • Knowledge of housing database management, card access, and work order systems (Adirondack Housing Director, C-CURE, Banner, Maxient, etc.).

  • Demonstrate commitment to student development.

  • Ability to work effectively with students, parents/guardians, and staff.

  • Demonstrate success in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships within a diverse academic community.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and use hands to handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to walk and lift boxes.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment varies depending on location. The main office is generally busy, yet quiet.
