Department Residence Life Job Purpose

As a member of the Office of Residence Life & Housing staff, the Assistant Director of Residence Life & Housing (Community Development) is responsible for providing leadership and oversight for community development initiatives and departmental programming efforts. The Assistant Director supports student learning and engagement through the development and evaluation of departmental learning outcomes and programming models. The Assistant Director also oversees student staff selection, training, and development as well as the implementation of the Residential Learning Communities.

Essential Duties

  • Supervise up to three Area Coordinators through regular meetings, guidance, and support of ongoing professional development

  • Coordinate the selection, training, and ongoing professional development for Resident Assistants, Head Resident Assistants, and Graduate Community Assistants

  • Lead the development, implementation and assessment of programs and initiatives within the residence halls that are designed to foster community engagement, student learning and a sense of belonging

  • Oversee the creation and assessment of departmental programming models that promote student engagement and learning

  • Oversee the Residential Learning Community initiative through efforts including, but not limited to, the management of marketing, recruitment, selection, housing placement, program implementation, and liaising with involved faculty and staff

  • Develop evaluation methods and assess student learning outcomes in departmental programming initiatives and student leadership experiences

  • Track and report all programming efforts for the Office of Residence Life providing regular reports to key departmental stakeholders - Participate in the Dean of Students emergency duty rotation to provide direction and support to Area Coordinator on duty and to respond to larger University crises

  • Participate in interventions to support students who are experiencing personal and/or academic challenges with a focus on personal and social development

Additional Skills Required

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal skills

  • Ability to handle sensitive situations in a caring and professional manner

  • Advanced organizational skills

  • Ability to effectively multi-task

  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office with emphasis on Excel

  • Understanding and appreciation of a Jesuit mission and education

  • Availability to complete evening and weekend responsibilities when needed

  • Ability to develop relationships with various constituencies such as academic departments and individual faculty members

  • Must be able to respect, support, and contribute to the University's Catholic and Jesuit mission

  • Must be able to support the University's commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture

Minimum Education Requirements

  • Bachelors' Degree is required

Preferred Education

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Student Personnel, Higher Education or closely related field preferred

Minimum Job Experience Requirements

  • Three (3) to five (5) years' professional work experience in student life or academic affairs with preference given to experience working in residence life & housing

Preferred Qualifications Years of Experience 3 University Classification Professional FLSA Classification Exempt Schedule/Work Hours Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Additional hours as required. Full Time/Part Time Full-Time Annual Schedule 12
