Qualifications:

  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse or Vocational Nurse.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working in a senior care or long-term care setting

  • Knowledge and experience working with residents with Alzheimer's disease, dementia or other memory impairments

  • Experience in supervising and leading others

Departmental Overview New Student Services (NSS) empowers undergraduate students to succeed and facilitates their transition to UC Berkeley. This process is known as the Golden Bear Experience, which consists of two parts: Before Students Arrive (advising and prep, online) and After Students Arrive (Move-In, Golden Bear Orientation, and Getting Your Bearings, on campus). UC Berkeley hosts the largest welcome week model orientation in the country by collaborating with 100+ campus partners and utilizing the talents and leadership of over 800 continuing students in multiple roles. Our Mission The overarching goals of the Golden Bear Experience are to: * welcome new students into UC Berkeley's scholarly community and lay the foundation for fostering their intellectual identity * create opportunities for participants to gain an understanding of academic requirements * create opportunities for participants to connect with university and college resources, services, and support structures * create opportunities for participants to engage with campus traditions and the range of UC Berkeley's unique cultural communities * create opportunities for participants to engage with their peers and the broader campus community * set the path for a lifelong relationship with the campus New Student Services is a department that reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students Office within the Division of Student Affairs. The Division of Student Affairs aims to advance the learning and personal growth of students by providing leadership, services, and opportunities that enable students to succeed in and contribute to a diverse and global society. Responsibilities The New Student Services Assistant Director has primary responsibility for coordinating transitional programs for 8,500 new students and their family members each year. As part of the NSS Leadership Team, the Assistant Director takes on primary responsibility for the recruitment, supervision, and training of all continuing student engagement required to operate Golden Bear Orientation. This includes six year round paid Student Coordinators, 60 mid level paid Orientation Mentors and over 600 volunteer Orientation Leaders. Additional responsibilities include: * Student Development: researches, develops, and executes training and supervisory structure continuing student staffing. Recruit, hire, train, and supervise 60 Orientation Mentors who will in turn recruit, train, and supervise 750 volunteer Orientation Leaders. (45%) * Programming: oversees, designs, and implements components of the Golden Bear Orientation program in collaboration with other NSS professional and student staff, and possibly campus partners. Articulates program needs, including OL training and budget impact.(20%) * Supervision: annually recruit, train and supervise graduate student. Graduate student will have oversight over individual Golden Bear Orientation programming, develop and execute Orientation Leader accountability, support facilitation development of Orientation Mentor class, and draft an annual proposal for New Student Services based on yearly assessment. (20%) * Transition: Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external campus stakeholders critical to program success including liaison with the LEAD Center, Residential Education,Transfer Student Center, Cal Alumni Association, Career Center, etc. Makes recommendations to management for changes and/or development of program design and applicability related to student transition following Golden Bear Orientation based on best practices. (15%) Required Qualifications * Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent years experience/training * 3+ years equivalent professional experience/training in student affairs/higher education. * Demonstrated experience working with student-facing programs * Demonstrated experience developing and facilitating training programs, including train the trainer. * Demonstrated experience supervising and/or advising student staff * Ability to build working relationships with, and prioritize the competing demands of, students, staff, faculty, administration, and community stakeholders. * Intercultural competence around fostering an equitable and inclusive environment and challenging organizational policies and practices that may be exclusionary. * Requires verbal and written communication skills, active listening, critical thinking, multi-task and time management skills. * Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques, dialogue facilitation, and conflict mediation. * Effective and persuasive communication skills for a variety of audiences and situations. * Working knowledge or the ability to gain knowledge of common University policies, processes, and procedures. * Thorough demonstrated knowledge of student development and leadership theory. * Working knowledge in administrative procedures and processes including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications. Preferred Qualifications * Previous experience in orientation or new student-focused department * Master's Degree in related professional field and/or equivalent years experience/training. * Advanced level knowledge of student development theory, multicultural competencies, advising and mentoring competencies; emerging research on parents of college students, course design and development, and leadership development and training.
