Job Summary

The Office of Residence Life at Oberlin College, invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Inclusion for Residential Communities. This is a full-time, 12-month continuing, Administrative and Professional Staff position reporting to the Director of Inclusion for Residential Communities.

Residential living and dining are integral to the educational experience of Oberlin students; more than 90% of Oberlin's students live and dine on campus during their entire 4 to 5 years as undergraduates.

The Assistant Director joins a team of dedicated student affairs professionals under the leadership of the Assistant Vice President/Dean of Residence Life and Auxiliary Services including the Director of Housing Operations, Director of Residential Engagement, Director of Inclusion for Residential Communities, and Director of Conferences & Residential Services.

The Assistant Director is responsible for the promotion of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives for the Office of Residence Life in collaboration with the Director of Inclusion for Residential Communities. The Assistant Director will work closely with faculty and staff across campus on DEIB initiatives within all residence halls and intentional programmatic initiatives that support the Language, Identity, and Thematic Experience (LITE). Additionally, the Assistant Director of Inclusion for Residential Communities will oversee the operations of a housing cluster in collaboration with an Area Coordinator. In all of these administrative functions, the Assistant Director will demonstrate excellent customer service using their interpersonal skills with students, parents, faculty, staff and outside community members; implementing effective, compelling publicity for processes and policies; and creating interactions with other campus and outside community partners that reflect respect and support for students' personal/social development and academic success.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Director will have responsibilities in the following areas: Assist the Director of Inclusion for Residential Communities in overseeing all departmental DEIB initiatives and coordinating housing process for the LITE cluster in collaboration with the Director of Inclusion for Residential Communities. The Assistant Director will coordinate student staff hiring and ongoing training, serve on divisional and college-wide committees, support students, and oversee facility concerns. The Assistant Director will work closely with other academic and administrative staff members such as the Dean of Students Office, Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Facilities Operations, Counseling and Psychological Services, Campus Safety, Student Support and Outreach, and the Office of Disability and Access. The incumbent's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following specific duties:

  • Assist in developing the vision direction in goal setting, planning, and development for the Office of Residence Life related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB)

  • Collaborate with faculty/staff/department advisors for Language, Identity, and Theme Communities to ensure effective communication and programming within each community

  • Work closely with the Center for Intercultural Engagement, Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and other Student Affairs office partners to promote DEIB initiatives within the Office of Residence Life

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Residential Engagement to support DEIB within student staff hiring and training as well as the Residential Curriculum

  • Listen carefully and respond clearly to concerns and questions related to student life from parents, students, faculty, staff, the Oberlin community, and other institutions through in-person, verbal, and written communication with understanding and compassion.

  • Provide indirect supervision for all LITE housing processes including applications for new communities, applications for housing placements, and housing selection for Language, Identity, Theme, and Living-Learning communities

  • Serve as a liaison with multiple offices on campus to facilitate consistent collaboration and information-sharing

  • Serve as a conduct hearing officer, educating residents about residence life and college policies

  • Indirectly supervise, oversee, and mentor two Bachelor's level Area Coordinators and 80 undergraduate Student Staff Members

  • In collaboration with an Area Coordinator, oversee the administrative operations of a housing cluster with 600-800 residents

  • Assist with early arrivals, residence hall openings/closings, life safety and facilities inspections, and other opening events with other campus offices

  • Engage in and develop collegial relationships with other employees in all areas of the institution

  • Participate in regular meetings within the Office of Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs

  • Maintain set office hours in the Central Residence Life Office.

  • Assist with the check-in, check-out, room inspections, and damage billing processes at the open and close of each semester.

  • Assist with the coordination of housing selection, assignments, and room changes for undergraduate students.

  • Serve in the campus-wide on-call system rotation, responding remotely to crisis situations as appropriate/required.

  • Maintain on-campus presence for community events including division required and/or sponsored functions.

  • During the summer, assist with office needs related to Conference Services, Housing Selection, and Training

  • This list is not all-inclusive and all employees are expected to perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions Marginal Job Functions Required Qualifications

Master's degree, which can be in student personnel or another field; excellent oral and written communication skills, strong customer service and organizational skills, proven ability to work collegially with a variety of constituencies, and traits that complement and demonstrate integrity and cooperation in relation to administration and management.

Desired Qualifications

2-4 years progressive professional experience in the following areas is desirable: event planning, training and development, residence hall administration, student/staff supervision, database management, and oversight of multifaceted processes.

Salary is $55,000 with a partially furnished two-bedroom apartment that includes internet access; a full meal plan for employee when dining services is in operation; and professional development funds. A free staff-only laundry room is available for use on campus.

All A&PS staff of Oberlin College receive a free parking permit, use of the recreational facilities, 35 PTO days per year, and health benefits. Pet policy allows for one pet with a $200 deposit and other requirements as outlined by the Live-in Staff Pet Policy.
