Housed in the Division of Student Affairs, Career Exploration and Development is responsible for all aspects of career development, from advising on career and graduate study to fostering employer and alumni connections that lead to internships and jobs. The strength of Career Exploration and Development lies in the supportive, individualized advising and programming it provides to students over four years of study; the real-world expertise of staff; deep and broad connections to alumni, parents and employers; and the post-graduate success of students who pursue traditional and non-traditional career paths as varied as arts, communications, consulting, finance, education, law, policy, marketing, medicine, science, engineering, advocacy, research, and technology, among others.The Office of Career Exploration and Development (CXD) at Bowdoin College is seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to fill the role of Assistant Director of Employer Relations. This position will support a portfolio of career advisors in cultivating employer relationships and sector-specific opportunities and run successful events to support recruiting and career education. The successful candidate will be highly organized and collaborative with excellent communication skills and strong commitment to student career development at a liberal arts institution.Essential Functions:Relationship, event, and opportunity management (with employers and alumni)

Collaborate with a portfolio of advisors on best ways to serve students interested in career sectors where they have expertise, which includes: building a programming plan, curating opportunities (jobs and internships), identifying target employers, and executing effective marketing strategy.
This role will most likely work closely with advisors in the nonprofit, education, law, policy and environment sectors.
Manage relationships with employer partners. Offer tiered/nuanced ways for employers to engage with students, based on their capacity and needs, and student interest. Maintain information on relationships and connections via Bowdoin Connect within Handshake.
Evaluate employer-driven programming and effectiveness through outcomes reporting and data collection.
Coordinate joint programming with Bates, Colby, and NESCAC peers.
Contribute to several "all-hands" events staffed by the whole team.
Bring or develop proficiency in Handshake, the software platform that is used to power employer engagement and advising.

Outreach and marketing
Serve three constituencies equally well - students, employers/alumni, and career advisors (specialists in their career sectors).
With employers and externally: Conduct outreach based on student's career aspirations (internships and jobs) as identified by students and advisors. Examine trends and patterns of recruiting engagement by organizations, students, and alumni to determine their level of satisfaction with recruiting and to inform outreach strategies. With sector advisors, create target lists of organizations given market research, student and alumni interest and sentiment, and recruiting partner past success and outlook.
With students: Effectively communicate CXD opportunities (jobs, internships, events, etc.) to students. Exercise strong writing skills to create marketing copy for events, programs, and opportunities targeted for an undergraduate student audience.
With advisors: Effectively communicate sector events and opportunities to advisors and assist with sector newsletter curation. Partner with advisors to create effective outreach to new employer prospects.

Pay and Benefits:
The targeted hiring range for the role based on the position requirements is $54,500 - $56,200. (48 weeks/year)

Education/Skills Requirements

Bachelor's degree
Committed to CXD core purpose: Every student is equipped to obtain the job (or graduate school placement) of their choice and gains the skills to obtain the next one.
Collaborative and service oriented. Thinks of self as a partner to advisors; leans on advisors' expertise to build the employer outreach strategy for students interested in that sector. This function has three primary constituencies to support: students (always first), alumni and employers, and colleagues. Customer-service oriented and collaborative across all three of these constituencies.
Strong operator/project manager - able to handle a high volume of tasks from big to small. Comfortable with a reliable, repeatable, effective hiring event and marketing model, but also open to innovation/different program models.
Skilled relationship builder. From the sales pitch (the value of Bowdoin education) to turning leads into opportunities. Personable/warm connector; responsive; asks the right questions; manages and retains relationships. Warm gracious Bowdoin representative and host events, on calls, in emails etc.; credible with a range of audiences; listens well.
Student-centered. Driven by what is best for students and a deep regard for students' agency in determining their future, and in their learning.
Commitment to equity. Has developed or worked with initiatives that serve underrepresented groups.
Familiarity with or willingness to learn software such as Handshake, Airtable, Excel, and Canva.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

Two to three or more years of work experience in a related function is ideal, such as admissions, recruitment, alumni or employer outreach, advising, program or event management.

Preferred:
Work experience and familiarity with one or more of the career sectors of focus: nonprofit, education, law, policy and environment sectors.
Experience with Handshake a plus.

Standard Work Days and Hours

Generally, 8:30 am

  • 5:00 pm while students are on campus; requires late evening work (for instance 1-2 evenings/week in Sept, Oct, Jan and Feb, less in other months).
    This is a .92 FTE position (i.e. four weeks scheduled not to work) with benefits including vacation time.
    Requires some travel (one week in March annually, plus 1-2 trips per year to cities around the country to meet with alumni and employers).
