This Assistant Director of Disability Services at Mitchell Hamline School of Law is responsible for supporting the Director of Disability and Student Services in the development and implementation of policies, programs, and services for students with disabilities. The Assistant Director will assist the Director in overseeing the daily operations of the office including conducting initial appointments with students, reviewing documentation, and determining accommodations based on student eligibility.

SALARY RANGE: $52,900- $74,059

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Department Operation

  • In the absence of the Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for department oversight, operations, and staff supervision.

  • Manage a student caseload. This duty includes conducting initial meetings, reviewing documentation, creating case notes, intentional follow up with students and/or faculty members, and referring students to on campus and/or external community resources.

  • Provide regular on campus departmental support (3-4 days per week on campus; 1-2 days per week telework optional). This pertains especially to prep and capstone weeks for the Blended program, and high-volume testing periods.

Project and Process Management

  • Partner with Director in developing and maintaining operational processes in compliance with MSHL policies as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act - As Amended, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and applicable federal and state laws.

  • Manage the exam variance process for students with testing accommodations.

  • Assist with annual budget development and implementation.

  • Support the department with software (Accessible Information Management) implementation and setup.

Campus Collaboration and Education

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver co-curricular workshops, programs, and training to faculty, staff, and students in partnership with Disability Services colleagues.

  • Assist with creating and executing accessible events, including orientation and commencement programs.

  • Provide leadership in developing strategic initiatives that promote and advance a framework of universal design campus wide.

  • Represent Disability Services and serve on various law school committees as assigned.

Supervision

  • Supervise the Accessibility Resource Specialist (1.0 FTE employee).

Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of current practices and trends related to disability services in a higher education setting.

  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively (in oral and written form) with staff, faculty, students, and campus visitors.

  • Effective problem solving and conflict management skills.

  • Capacity to manage multiple tasks of varying priority on a regular basis.

  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, including cultivating professional development opportunities to remain current in the Disability Services field.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster collaborative partnerships across campus.

  • Working knowledge of relevant assistive technology, such as Read & Write and Glean.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field

  • 3-5 years of work experience in Higher Education, preferably in an office providing disability support services.

  • Strong working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) As Amended, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and applicable federal and state laws.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree (in Education, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Social Work, Disability Studies, Vocational Rehabilitation, or a related field)
  • Supervisory experience.
