Assistant Director of Alumni Relations

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins' focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine-strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.

Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid arrangement with three days onsite.

The manager will confirm the team's core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

The Assistant Director of Alumni Relations is a key member of the Development and Alumni Relations team at Carey Business School. This position manages philanthropy and relationship building for current students and Carey's recent graduates (within five years of graduation). The Assistant Director has three primary focus areas: 1) manage philanthropic and engagement programs for students, including Beet Week, Carey's annual spirit week, 2) build connections with recent graduates as they transition from students to alumni, and 3) cultivate donors from among Carey's recent graduates.

Programs for students and recent graduates support a successful transition into the alumni community. These early engagement programs help drive our students' identities as members of the Johns Hopkins alumni community, and cultivate a pipeline of lifelong alumni supporters and leaders. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Alumni Relations.

Key responsibilities:

A. Manage philanthropic and engagement programs for students, including Beet Week (40%)

  • With oversight from the Director of Alumni Relations, manage the annual Beet Week activities. Beet Week is Carey Business School's spirit week, with activities aimed in particular at educating students about the philanthropic history of Carey Business School and opportunities for students to get involved.

  • Manage the sneak peek and other activities in the Fall and Winter that set the stage for Beet Week in the Spring.

  • With the Sr. Associate Director of Operations, plan and execute the philanthropic giving opportunities during Beet Week and strategy to enhance consecutive gifts for previous Beet Week donors

  • Educate broader alumni population about Beet Week and engage them in Beet Week activities, with a focus on those who experienced Beet Week while students

  • Work with student government and other student groups to promote Beet Week during the academic year.

  • Liaison with student organizations to identify opportunities to integrate alumni into their programming

  • Manage other opportunities throughout the year for students to engage in DAR activities.

B. Build connections with recent graduates as they transition from students to alumni (40%)

  • Work with student government, clubs and other student leaders to identify potential volunteers among students as they transition into alumni and develop strategy to integrate into existing alumni communities (clubs, affinity groups)

  • Identify volunteer opportunities for recent graduates and recruit participants.

  • Develop an understanding of the programs, funding priorities and engagement opportunities for all aspects of Carey Business School along with a general knowledge about the university.

  • Serve as an integral part of Carey's DAR team, ensuring smooth transitions for alumni who are ready for higher levels of giving and engagement, and therefore warrant attention from other DAR team members.

  • With input from the Sr. Associate Director of Operations and Assistant Director of Leadership Giving, develop and execute an annual plan to cultivate and solicit recent graduates

C. Manage Carey DAR's Communication Channels (20%)

  • Work with Carey's Marketing and Communications team to cultivate content for the Carey Connections monthly alumni newsletter.

  • Design each issue of Carey's monthly alumni newsletter.

  • Liaise with the MarComm team to ensure that all pertinent Carey DAR Webpages are up-to-date and accurate.
