Assistant Director, Marketing and Communications

The George Mason University College of Science invites applications for an Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications. Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications for the College of Science supports the Assistant Dean of Marketing and Communications in facilitating the College's marketing and communications efforts; managing the daily operations of the marketing function; contributing to the development and implementing the marketing strategy across all media and events. The Assistant Director also works with departments and programs to market their degrees to potential students, identify and write stories and communications for public relations and central communications distribution, manages and participates in the detail design, construction, implementation and support of marketing and web projects that meet established University specifications, design criteria, and quality standards for College of Science projects.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate the day to day implementation, meetings and task completion of the college's marketing and communications project portfolio in collaboration with the Assistant Dean and other leadership of the college's departments and programs;

  • Serve as project intake source to collect and help prioritize requests, meet with clients/comms team members to confirm purpose, scope and progress of projects, written copy and graphic content while also serving as primary point of contact for all COS project support;

  • Facilitate production process compliance, deadlines, and timeline management, including project purchasing (marcom team p-card owner) and financial expense posting and processing;

  • Serve as WRIKE power user and primary tool liaison to build, populate and manage project folders to collect and review materials in WRIKE project management tool;

  • Review and track daily, weekly and monthly deliverables, including periodic presentations of service output, gap analysis and successes to recognize performance and improve production;

  • Collaborate with COS marcom team to spearhead ROI driven and audience-centered design process to develop and assess useful and compelling content and marketing materials;

  • Provide periodic WRIKE and Google Analytics training for COS stakeholders;

  • Help periodically develop and systematize the marketing plan consistent with the college's strategy and work with College leadership to help implement those plans across our various direct, social and other digital channels including the college website (COS Web Network), and print media; and

  • Conceptualize and execute marketing materials: write and edit emails, blog posts, website, sign and flyer copy marketing various College of Science programs, people, research and events.

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience working in an office environment;

  • Good understanding of customer service philosophies;

  • Strong project management, oral and written communications skill set;

  • Developed time management skills to coordinate multiple priorities;

  • Technical and organizational skills to track and provide project deployment and effectiveness updates;

  • Solid understanding of Mason communications, production, writing, and brand/design standards to edit and monitor style, tone and process;

  • Familiar with creating, modifying and optimizing social media, marketing emails, web & print graphics and layouts to maintain a consistent and strong design aesthetic;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop cohesive working relationships with internal and external clients, such as COS Dean's office and departments and centers within COS; and

  • Ability to process suggestions, corrections, and feedback professionally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Mason web standards, Drupal CMS and/or the ability to learn new programs;

  • Flexibility to adapt to change and willing to learn and develop new skill sets as applicable;

  • Ability to utilize social media to bolster web presence;

  • Knowledge of market analysis, and marketing strategies and techniques; and

  • Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze web, digital and social metrics.
