Special Information

Job Description

This position supports the Director in the Office of Inclusion: Multicultural & LGBTQIA Student Services (IMQ) by specializing in working within the Hispanic/Latiné student communities on campus as well as working collaboratively with community organizations to identify Hispanic/Latiné community resources that provide additional support to NAU students. The Assistant Director also supports multicultural programming and initiatives in the Office of Inclusion to better serve the intersections and diversity of the NAU student populations that IMQ serves. The Assistant Director, Hispanic/Latiné Student Services, works to support, empower, and promote the success of students through identity affirming programming and student engagement. Support for students includes providing leadership for student initiatives, managing the Inclusion & Diversity Scholars program, advising Hispanic/Latiné student organizations, and developing collaborative partnerships with university departments and outside constituent groups. This position will report directly to the IMQ Director.

Programming and Services

  • Develop and implement programming and support initiatives for Hispanic/Latiné student success.

  • Develop and coordinate programming in recognition of heritage and celebration events and activities (e.g. Hispanic/Latiné Heritage Month, Dia de los Muertos, Cesar Chavez Day, etc.).

  • Collaborate with on-campus and local Hispanic/Latiné partners, organizations, committees, and groups to support Hispanic/Latiné students and initiatives.

  • Develop resources to support Hispanic/Latiné students such as newsletters, informational materials, a webpage, support groups, and other services.

  • Advise student club members and leaders regarding program planning and coordination, leadership and personal development, and University process and policies.

  • Provide direct support and resources to students while creating a safe space and environment for walk-ins and student interactions.

  • Maintain and enhance educational, social, support, referral, and resource programs and services for students regarding issues of multiculturalism, inclusion, as well as sexual and gender identities.

  • Present and assist with various multicultural/intersectional workshops, campus activities, and events.

  • Participate in outreach events and activities on behalf of the Office of Inclusion.

  • Facilitate presentations about IMQ resources and support to diverse groups, including prospective students, current students, families, staff, and faculty.

  • Present and facilitate various diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings for students.

  • Oversee and manage the Inclusion and Diversity (ID) Scholars peer mentoring program in collaboration with the Senior Coordinator, including providing guidance and support to the mentors, monitoring student engagement, assisting with outreach, and providing direct student support.

Supervision

  • Participate in the hiring, on-boarding, and training of professional, graduate student, ID Scholars peer mentors, and student staff.

  • Supervise and manage a Senior Coordinator, Graduate Assistant, and several Peer Mentors.

  • Manage staff performance and provide continuous feedback and guidance.

  • Facilitate staff learning and development through intentional training opportunities.

  • Assist in supervising the front desk, as needed.

Collaboration and Partnership

  • Collaborate and participate in programming with university administrators, faculty, and staff on various committees and projects to improve the student experience.

  • Build effective working relationships with partners and liaisons across campus in support of all IMQ students and programs.

Administrative

  • Participate in the development of departmental goals and objectives, strategic planning and assessment, and participation in campus-wide committees.

  • Serve as the office liaison and expert on Hispanic/Latiné student success knowledge and trends.

  • Communicate in both English and Spanish with students, families, guest lecturers, and visitors to promote programs and events in our Spanish speaking community and media.

  • Contribute to the planning and organization of the office programming calendar as well as attend office and university events throughout the academic year.

  • Assist in the maintenance of the Office of Inclusion website and the Hispanic/Latiné resource page.

  • Support front desk operations through understanding of processes and provide support, as needed.

Assessment

  • Assist the Director in developing and administering assessments and evaluations in collaboration with divisional Assessment staff.

  • Evaluate Hispanic/Latiné programs, events, and activities for continuous improvement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, AND

  • 3-5 years' experience in advisement, student mentoring programming, or student success programming, AND

  • 2-4 years supervising and coordinating the work of others.

  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree and at least two years of professional experience working with multicultural/intersectional students in higher education.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, student advocacy, and student-centered learning and development.

  • Demonstrated experience in public speaking and presenting to diverse communities and an understanding of multiple identity development.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic principles of student development theory and, specifically, major trends and issues faced by ethnic minority students attending U.S. colleges or universities.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity and multiculturalism.

  • Demonstrated experience in program planning, implementation, and assessment.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Experience hiring, supervising, and cultivating a cohesive staff.

  • Previous and progressively responsible experience providing student development services and facilitating student success within a college or university environment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Anticipated salary range is $63,000 - $65,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election.
