Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Counseling Services (SCS), the Assistant Director for Training and Education is responsible for administration of our APA-accredited psychology internship program and NYNJADOT psychology externship program. The Student Counseling Services department is strongly committed to providing high quality, generalist training in a cognitive behavioral framework. Trainees are encouraged to develop skill in a variety of evidence-based treatments, including CBT, DBT, ACT, and EX-RP. In addition, the Assistant Director for Training and Education provides individual therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, clinical consultation, workshops and outreach programming to the Hofstra community which include undergraduate students, graduate students, law students and medical students.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintains a warm, supportive learning environment for trainees.

  • Consistently models professional behavior, appropriate boundaries, effective communication and compassionate, ethical clinical care.

  • Fosters team building amongst each cohort of trainees, recognizing when a trainee is struggling and provides developmentally appropriate guidance and support.

  • Assists with recruitment of trainees in accordance with APA, NYNJADOT and Human Resources guidelines, including maintaining Hofstra SCS's APPIC directory page, NYNJADOT directory page, and the training section of Hofstra SCS's website.

  • Performs coordinated application review and interviews for internship and externship applicants.

  • Seeks to implement best practices to ensure a fair and equitable selection process that yields a diverse class of trainees to serve a diverse student body.

  • Manages scheduling of interns and externs.

  • Assists the Executive Director with the appointment and onboarding of interns and externs.

  • Plans and coordinates training for interns and externs, including orientation week, extern didactic series and intern seminars.

  • Provides individual supervision to five to eight trainees per semester, including review of trainees' clinical documentation.

  • Assists trainees with providing letters and referrals for clients and provides unscheduled assistance to trainees as necessary.

  • Participates in weekly group supervision/staff meetings with the SCS clinical staff.

  • Completes observations and formal evaluations of trainees at the end of the semester.

  • Communicates with trainees' academic programs regarding any significant concerns.

  • Maintains records of trainee evaluations.

  • Assists trainees with preparation for next steps after the completion of their program.

  • Engages in continual evaluation and development of internship and externship programs, including collection of data necessary for continued APA-accreditation.

  • Takes lead when submitting reports required for continued accreditation of internship program.

  • Recognizes trainee accomplishments and maintains morale throughout the year, coordinating events such as annual welcome brunch for new trainees, holiday lunch, end-of-semester celebration, intern/extern graduations, and acknowledgement of dissertation defense.

  • Assists the Executive Director with compilation and presentation of SCS utilization statistics for end-of-semester reports.

  • Provides individual therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, clinical consultation, workshops and outreach programming to the Hofstra community.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Psychology and NYS license in Psychology required.
  • A minimum of two years of experience providing clinical supervision to psychology trainees.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of clinical experience with college students, preferred.
  • APA-accredited psychology internship.

Salary/Salary Range $95,000 - $100,000

Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education.
