The Assistant Director for Student Transitions & Persistence in the Academic Skills Center (ASC) collaborates closely with all ASC team members in creating and realizing the vision of the Center. The Assistant Director is primarily responsible for overseeing the Learning at Dartmouth program, an academic program offered each fall term with ongoing support sessions throughout the academic year. The program is offered for first-year and incoming transfer students and consists of learning strategies workshops, values and goal-setting exercises, and campus resource-navigation sessions. The Assistant Director partners with Student Affairs colleagues outside of the ASC and a variety of academic partners. In addition, the Assistant Director conducts individual academic coaching with a focus on supporting first-year and transfer students. Moreover, this role creates, promotes, and facilitates the provision of learning enhancement services and programming for Dartmouth College's undergraduate student community. This is a three-year term position.

Description Required Qualifications

  • Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Two years of professional experience, preferably in a higher education setting: teaching, advising, evaluating and/or counseling students; working with programs or services that support student transitions such as orientation, residential life, learning communities, and/or academic advising; conducting workshops and trainings.

  • Knowledge of enrichment/learning strategies to support students with academic difficulties.

  • Strong understanding of student development theory.

  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.

  • Demonstrated organizational, time management, problem solving, project management, presentation, and team-building skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, group leadership, and written and verbal communications skills.

  • Tact and discretion in dealing with sensitive or confidential matters.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree, with an emphasis in academic advising, counseling, education, student affairs, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and skills collaborating with colleagues in developing integrated programs that support a diverse range of students and student issues.

  • Experience managing a term- or semester-long "College 101" or "Introduction to College Learning" related program.

  • Formal training in academic coaching with completion of accredited coaching courses.

  • Established supervisory skills.

Description

Learning at Dartmouth Program (40%)

  • Manages the Learning at Dartmouth Program: teaches course sessions, identifies guest speakers, and trains and supervises student facilitators.

  • Regularly revises program syllabus and termly offerings consistent with current best practices in higher education pertaining to first-year student development and navigating transitions.

  • In collaboration with campus colleagues creates and delivers program sessions with a focus on learning strategies, multicultural competency, and navigating campus resources.

  • Identifies and expands ways to increase the involvement of underrepresented students in program.

  • Assesses the Learning at Dartmouth Program on a termly and annual basis and uses data to inform the development of future program offerings.

Percentage Of Time 40% Description

Academic Coaching, Learning Strategies Workshops, & Online Resource-sharing (30%)

  • Serves a diverse student population, coaching and advising individuals and communities of undergraduate students on learning strategies with a focus on the academic development of first-year and transfer students.

  • Coordinates, initiates, and conducts specific outreach to undergraduate students, including academically underprepared, low-income, first-generation, and students of Color.

  • Responsible for delivering department learning strategy programs, workshops, and presentations, working with the ASC Program Coordinator for logistical support.

  • Researches, promotes, and trains students in the use of relevant online learning support/enhancement sites, apps, and other resources.

Percentage Of Time 30% Description

Representation & Cross-Campus Collaboration (15%)

  • Communicates with faculty, students, and staff to solicit feedback & recommendations related to enhancing student learning. Collaborates with campus colleagues (e.g., Undergraduate Dean's Office, the Office of Pluralism and Leadership, First Generation Office, Student Accessibility Services, Pre-Health Advising, Athletics, and Residential Life) to create and provide holistic support and programming based on current student needs.

  • Represents the ASC on various committees and in professional associations, and at designated professional conferences.

  • Advances and increases digital outreach essential to the dissemination of information & promotion of student learning programs via the ASC website, Facebook, Instagram, Blog. Primary responsibility for Facebook and Instagram.

Percentage Of Time 15% Description

Supervisory (15%)

  • Supervises 1-3 undergraduate student and/or graduate student interns.

  • In collaboration with the Associate Director and Assistant Director for Academic Enrichment & Learning, is responsible for the supervision and development of a caseload of tutors each quarter.
