Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Museum Director, the Assistant Director for Education and Community Engagement supports the mission and goals of The Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium through the development of interpretive educational programs, and by fostering a supportive relationship with the community, local families, schools, and organizations. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of museum education and community learning including designing and teaching innovative youth, adult, and multi-generational educational programming, coordinating and leading school field trips, organizing summer youth programs, developing partnerships with community organizations, developing in-gallery programming connected to permanent and temporary exhibitions and assisting with other education, and museum programming as needed.

By offering relevant, compelling, and engaging educational programs that connect the past to contemporary and future issues, the overall goal of these programs is to educate the community, and a worldwide audience, about the rich history of Hinchliffe Stadium. Not only the role that it played in the cultural life of Paterson, but in the complex history of African-American Baseball and its impact on the social advancement of Paterson and America, while increasing attendance and building community and financial support for the Museum. Entering at a pivotal moment at the launch of the museum, the Assistant Director for Education and Community Engagement will serve a key role in shaping the Museum's Education and Engagement mission and contribute to the future of the Museum and the restored Hinchliffe Stadium by increasing program accessibility and awareness while collaborating with a variety of teams/departments to develop and implement informative programs that engage learners in examining its past so that they may understand the present, and envision their role in shaping the Stadium's future along with its place in the community.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate and implement diverse and inclusive mission-centered education, engagement, and learning opportunities in connection with specific exhibitions and the collection as a whole.

  • Manage education and public program initiatives, encouraging diverse, multi-generational audiences and fostering active learning and engagement

  • Develop and lead K-12 group programs (onsite, offsite, and virtual field trips); oversee docents and staff assigned to Museum education; and lead select new initiatives as funding permits.

  • Serve as a liaison to local communities to assess ways in which The Charles J. Muth Museum of Hinchliffe Stadium can leverage its resources and advance its mission through creative programming that meets community needs while growing museum attendance.

  • Collaborate with the Museum Director to develop and refine interpretive plans for the permanent collection and exhibits that offer new and varied entry points for visitor-learning.

  • Collaborate with the Museum Director to design and develop learning content that adheres to NJ State teaching standards for history, math, and science.

  • Work with local school boards and local teachers to continually adapt, coordinate, and lead Sense of Place programming.

  • Research, design, and implement interpretive materials (analog and digital) for permanent galleries and temporary exhibits with a specific focus on experiential learning.

  • Develop a robust calendar of year-round offerings for educators, including tours, workshops, continuing education courses, talks, and content production.

  • Maintain data regarding constituents served and programs offered, including school tour numbers, student visits, teacher workshops, public programs, audience attendance, revenue earned etc.

  • Assist in developing museum lecture and workshop series that explore temporary exhibit themes and advance community dialogue.

  • Assist in grant writing for program funding.

  • Work with the University's Center for Community engagement to establish an advisory group of faculty/center directors to build interdisciplinary connections across campus.

  • Work with University staff to develop public relations and marketing strategies for the promotion of education initiatives and programming, including coordination and development of print and electronic materials.

  • Interview prospective subordinate staff members and makes recommendations concerning selection recruits, hires, and supervises a diverse team of student staff and interns.

  • Plans and develops budgets for educational programs and guest speakers.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in art history, education, museum studies, or a related discipline.

  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience working in museums, cultural institutions, or other educational settings.

  • Experience planning, developing, and implementing programs in a museum setting or comparable organization.

  • Committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a passion for advancing equity within cultural institutions.

  • Excellent public speaking, writing, and editing skills.

  • Experience developing curriculum or educational materials for K-12 audiences

  • Willing to work outside of normal office hours is required, including evenings and weekends.

  • Ability to work effectively in a changing environment, including changing work demands, procedures, technology, or priorities.

PREFERRED:

  • Master's degree from an accredited university in Museum Education, Museum Studies, Education, or related discipline.

  • Demonstrated success in working directly with educator/teacher and adult audiences Past experience with primary and secondary teacher training.

  • Experience working with underserved groups and with the development of tours and programs, including those for visitors with special needs.

  • Proficiency in current social media platforms, as well as audience evaluation and implementation of visitor surveys.
