Assistant Director for Coalitions

The Substance Abuse Prevention & Education office at the University of South Carolina is seeking an Assistant Director for Coalitions to join our team. The purpose of this position is to provide leadership for a coalition-based, environmental approach to reducing high-risk substance use and related harms at the University of South Carolina, in the surrounding community, and across the state. The Assistant Director for Coalitions will lead the work of the Carolina Community Coalition, recruit and engage stakeholder participation, and facilitate the continued development of the coalition's strategic plan. This position will also coordinate training and technical assistance on collegiate substance misuse, campus policy development, federal and state regulations, best practices, and innovative approaches to addressing substance misuse for campus professionals in South Carolina. The Assistant Director will lead evaluation efforts, including Drug Free Schools and Communities Act compliance, program evaluation, data analysis, and compiling reports for distribution.

Primary duties include:

  • Coordinating Campus & Community Coalition activities

  • Technical Assistance for SC Campuses

  • Guiding Assessment efforts for the team

  • Lead the Biennial Review

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Public Health, Social Work or related field, or a bachelor's degree and 2 years experience, or equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Public Health, Social Work or related field and 2 years of experience in community organizing, assessment, or collegiate substance misuse prevention and education.

  • Strategic planning experience and ability to successfully communicate a shared vision.

  • Proficiency in meeting facilitation.

  • Community organizing and coalition building experience.

  • Ability to balance multiple projects, and work autonomously and as a member of a team.

  • Knowledge and experience with assessment methods and evaluation processes.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong project management skills and an orientation for process.

  • Excellent auditory, verbal, written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong skills relevant to establishing and maintaining successful partnerships with students, faculty/staff, community members and other constituent stakeholders.

  • Excellent public speaking skills.

  • Ability to exercise a high level of confidentiality, independent initiative and judgement.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Carolina Community Coalition

  • Coordinate Campus & Community Coalition activities, including recruitment and cultivation of members, facilitation of agendas and meetings, training for members and constituent groups, and promotion of community education and advocacy opportunities.

  • Build/sustain strategic relationships and partnerships on campus and in the surrounding community. Serve on local boards, committees, and commissions, as appropriate.

  • Manage the implementation and regular review of the Coalition strategic plan to address high-risk substance use.

Technical Assistance for institutions of higher education in South Carolina

  • Coordinate training, workshops, learning opportunities, and technical assistance on collegiate substance misuse, campus policy development, Drug Free Schools and Communities Act compliance, best practices, and innovative approaches to addressing substance misuse.

  • Develop and disseminate regular communication to campus professionals.

  • Provide guidance and direction for campuses in developing Biennial Reviews and annual notifications for Drug Free Schools and Communities Act compliance and implementing best practices.

Assessment

  • Guide assessment efforts for the office, including program evaluation, campus-wide surveys, focus groups, and interviews. Develop reports and data summaries for campus leadership.

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement state level well-being surveys for South Carolina public colleges and universities.

  • Manage administrative records and reports, including implementation progress, budgets and expenditures, and campus and community data related to high-risk substance use.

  • Assist in developing applications for external funding.

Biennial Review

  • Serve as the point person to ensure Drug Free Schools and Community Act compliance for USC Columbia including distribution of Annual Notifications each semester.

  • Responsible for coordinating the Biennial Review Committee, engaging membership from all campus entities who provide prevention programing and policy enforcement, collecting data from multiple sources, and drafting the Biennial Review.

Supervision duties

  • Recruit, train and supervise graduate assistant and interns.

  • Coordinate the work of undergraduate student assistants assigned to Coalition projects.

  • Overseeing the work of a team or department to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.

  • Assigning duties and responsibilities to team members based on their skills and workload.

  • Providing guidance, direction, and support to team members to help them achieve their goals and perform their duties effectively.

  • Monitoring employee performance and providing feedback, coaching, and training as needed.

  • Identifying issues or problems that arise in the work environment and taking proactive steps to address them.

  • Resolving conflicts or disagreements among team members and facilitating communication and collaboration.

  • Making decisions and providing guidance on complex or ambiguous issues that may arise during day-to-day operations.

  • Conducting performance evaluations and providing regular feedback to employees on their performance.

  • Recognizing and rewarding employees for their achievements and contributions.

  • Work with SAAS Human Resources to address performance issues or disciplinary matters as necessary.

  • Serving as a liaison between upper management and frontline employees, relaying information, goals, and expectations effectively.

  • Facilitating team meetings, discussions, and training sessions to ensure clear communication and understanding among team members.

  • Listening to employee concerns, suggestions, and feedback and addressing them appropriately.

  • Liaison with SAAS HR to ensure position description are written accurately, and pay is equitable. Supervise search committees and manage departmental onboarding for new hires, while also ensuring seamless offboarding processes for departing employees.

  • Ensure fair and equitable performance increases as necessary.

  • Other duties as assigned
