Job Title Assistant Director for Career Services & Experiential Learning Position Summary

The assistant director offers individual career coaching, internship, and job-search advising to students and alumni, develops and presents workshops and presentations, and develops positive relationships with students, employers, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members. The assistant director also serves as primary administrator of career services' Student Leadership Certificate program and student recognition awards ceremony. The Assistant Director assists the department in managing general operations, program assessments, maintaining and developing employment recruiting events, and development of college and career programs. This role also engages in appropriate community organizations to further the opportunities for post-graduation success of our students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Career Coaching/Programming:

  • Serves as the primary Career Coach for individual student appointments counseling students regarding career/major planning and development and employment issues and the implementation of vocational instruments.

  • Counsels students on a group basis through workshops and career/undecided major-related programs and presentations.

  • Recruits and retains students participating in the Career Services Leadership Certificate program.

  • Organizes the yearly Rammys Leadership Awards recognition ceremony

  • Assists the office with the planning and implementation of Career Services experiential learning events including, Career Fair, Etiquette Dinners and Mentor Luncheons.

  • Develop workshop and career related presentations to assist students in readiness for internships and jobs.

Answers questions and helps students find resource materials.

Administrative/Financial:

  • Assists with the implementation of employer recruiting activities for entry-level employment and internships, including information sessions, interviews, career fairs, and other marketing strategies directed to students.

  • Manages the approval process and disbursement of funds for the Student Development Fund, a fund used to promote the personal and professional development of students and student groups.

  • Assists with the implementation of surveys to identify students hired by recruiters, quality of services provided, employment offers, and class-wide career interests surveys and compiles and analyzes data for consultation and/or event design.

  • Publicizes programs including web page and blitz bulletins; updates career service entries in campus publications; publicizes events on campus-wide web calendar; and keeps students (and staff) current via electronic bulletins.

  • Trains and supervises student employees on responsibilities including customer service, phone and email communication, data entry, and event assistance.

Recruiting and Employer Relations:

  • Proactively seeks out opportunities for outreach and collaboration with academic/administrative departments and student organizations.

  • Assists with the development and implementation of strategies designed to increase employment and internship opportunities for university students and alumni.

  • Assists with new student orientations and other academic student support programs as assigned.

Professional Representation:

  • Represents college in various professional organizations such as MAC3 (Metroplex Area Consortium of Career Centers), NACE, etc.

  • Serves on University and Divisional Committees.

  • Serves as the Texas Wesleyan University School Coordinator for the Workforce Recruitment Program (connects federal and select private-sector employers nationwide with college students, graduate students and recent graduates with disabilities).

  • Establishes and maintains effective and cooperative working relationships with students, alumni, faculty, employers, colleges and universities, and the general public. Initiates contact with employers.

Represents Career Services on-campus and in the community as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Education, Certifications and/or Licenses

Required:

  • Master's degree in Student Services, Student Affairs, Counseling, Education, or related field required.

  • Professional experience in student development, career counseling, basic counseling/coaching skills, student leadership, internships, or working with career development/student development theory.

Experience

Preferred:

  • Two to four (2-4) years of professional experience in career development, student development, or employment counseling, or the equivalent.

  • Knowledge of higher education academic environments, principles of student development theory, and academic advising.

  • Student leadership experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Supervisory, management, and relationship-building skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and knowledge of standard filing procedures.

  • Ability to plan, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to adhere to University & departmental policies and procedures.

  • Ability to maintain a professional office atmosphere.

  • Proficiency with an integrated administrative system and current computer software programs.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills.

  • Flexibility to work independently and as a member of a team.

  • Ability to investigate, analyze data, draw conclusions and make decisions to solve problems.

  • Knowledge of rules, standards, regulations, and laws regarding student records.

  • Ability to use discretion in handling confidential matters, while complying with FERPA regulations.

  • Even tempered and ability to maintain positive approach under pressure.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other University employees.
