Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions seeks an Assistant Director for Access and Recruitment. The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing the planning and implementation of outreach and access initiatives. The Assistant Director will have a full range of admissions responsibilities, including implementing the strategic recruitment plan using a budget-conscious approach. The Assistant Director will manage one direct report who is responsible for overseeing 50+ student volunteers. The Assistant Director will also coordinate several on- and off-campus recruitment events throughout the admissions cycle.

As a member of the management team in Undergraduate Admissions, this person will participate in the strategic and tactical decisions for the office.

Position requires some evening and weekend work, as well as limited travel.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a master's degree and 3 years of related program experience, or bachelor's degree and 5 years related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Admissions experience or experience working with high school students preferred.

  • Strong preference given for those with experience working with diverse populations.

  • Prefer experience with increasing levels of responsibility in college/university admissions, high schools, or community-based organizations.

  • Experience using Ellucian Banner student information system, Technolutions Slate, College Board EPS, ACT EIS and Cognos reporting is preferred.

  • Experience making data-driven decisions preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and be able to connect with a broad range of constituents, including parents, students, university administrators, and community members, in individual and group settings.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities concurrently is required.

  • Ability to work independently and with little direct supervision, but also collaboratively as a member of a team.

  • Ability to become knowledgeable of admissions policies and procedures.

  • Familiarity with national issues and trends in higher education.

  • Ability to read and evaluate academic credentials.

  • Ability to maintain confidential information.

  • Possess and maintain a customer-friendly attitude.

  • Ability to tactfully and appropriately counsel applicants and their families.

  • Ability to cultivate and manage key relationships and develop and promote outreach programs and opportunities collaboratively with appropriate university departments.

  • Ability to inspire students to pursue higher education and promote the university throughout the state.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Position requires some weekend and evening work.

  • Possess a valid driver's license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.

  • Must be able to travel overnight, both in South Carolina and out of state, for recruitment purposes.

Implement the comprehensive and strategic recruitment plan as it relates to the area of access and community engagement. Propose new and creative ideas to ensure prospective students have been personally, effectively, and knowledgeably served, while working toward the highest yield of enrolled students from the admitted group.

Supervise one full-time staff member who assists with recruitment events and provides program support. Ensure the staff member is also effectively implementing the strategic recruitment plan and managing their recruitment territory effectively using a budget-conscious approach. Provide oversight to full-time staff member who manages a diverse group of 50+ student volunteers to help recruit prospective students throughout the year.

Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 25 Job Duty

Plan and execute both on- and off-campus recruiting programs, including, but not limited to two summer overnight programs, several fall recruitment events, a spring yield luncheon, and other annual recruitment events. Connect with campus partners to ensure they are knowledgeable of and participate in admissions events when needed. Serve on committees and assist campus partners with other outreach activities as needed.

Manage programming and outreach opportunities with key constituents and groups; these partners include, but are not limited to the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, TRIO Programs, academic college partners, and community-based organizations.

Participate in admissions tasks to include, but not limited to: Selectively review applications for admissions and scholarships; represent USC at on-campus events; travel to represent USC at off-campus events; carry out assigned special projects involving recruitment and office research; and other duties as assigned.
