Essential Job Duties

NC State University is seeking an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader for the position of Assistant Director, Facilities and Operations. We seek an individual with proven leadership experience capable of working in a fast-paced, results-oriented team. The candidate will empower student and professional staff to cultivate world-class wellness and recreation programs, services and facilities that promote and enhance student success inside and outside of the classroom.

The candidate will manage NC State Wellness and Recreation facilities and operations for students, the entire NC State community and external users that create a safe, positive environment that enhances students' educational experiences. Facilities include the 400,000-square-foot Wellness and Recreation Center/Carmichael Complex and multiple outdoor fields. Facilities are used by Wellness and Recreation, Health and Exercise Studies (HES) academic department, Intercollegiate Athletics, Dining Services and numerous campus partners and external constituents.

In order to successfully accomplish this, the following is required:

  • Provide strategic leadership and supervise two full-time professional staff that include the Facility Operations Coordinator and Reservations Manager. The position indirectly supervises approximately 150 student staff. Ensure staff provides the highest level of customer service for members.

  • Provide strategic leadership for the recruitment, hiring, training, supervising, mentoring and coaching of approximately 150 facility student staff that includes: program assistants, facility supervisors, facility specialists and facility assistants with a focus on student development and learning.

  • Develop guidelines, procedures and manage Wellness and Recreation indoor and outdoor facilities. Document and follow-up all incidents and accidents that occur in facilities.

  • Manage a comprehensive risk management plan for Wellness and Recreation facilities. Ensure all Wellness and Recreation facilities operate within required risk management procedures and oversee the implementation of standardized facility safety practices. Perform weekly risk management assessments. Coordinate repairs and solutions appropriately through contact with Wellness and Recreation staff, University Facility Operations, Housekeeping, Landscape Services or other appropriate agency as needed.

  • Manage budget for facilities and operations. Coordinate purchasing efforts to maintain appropriate facility and operations equipment/supplies inventory following departmental and university guidelines.

  • Develop guidelines and procedures for all internal/external groups utilizing indoor and outdoor recreation facilities to ensure proper compliance with department practices and University guidelines.

  • Manage facility-related service agreements with Housekeeping, Landscape Services, Facilities Operations or other appropriate agencies as needed. Ensure scheduled maintenance is completed according to specifications/contracts. Evaluate and execute changes to service agreements as needed.

  • Serve as liaison to the Facility Maintenance Supervisor to support the maintenance plan for Wellness and Recreation facilities. Support the prescribed daily, weekly and monthly tasks developed to maintain industry standards for the care of equipment and facility surfaces.

  • Manage facility minor construction projects (external University contractors). This includes defining the scope of work, developing timelines, appropriate work schedules based on impacted spaces and ensuring quality control of work in partnership with Design and Construction Services project manager.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Assist as needed in all required departmental functions.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's degree in recreation, sports management, student affairs, higher education administration or other related fields. If in progress, must be completed by the date of hire.

  • At least two years of professional experience in recreation facility management.

  • Demonstrated integrity, ethics, and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

  • Commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Four years or more of progressively responsible professional experience in collegiate recreation facility management.

  • Previous success supervising professional staff.
