Summary: The Assistant Director of the Exploratory Advising Center is responsible for serving as a leader for a unit of professional staff who provide advising and related support of students who are exploring majors and/or are on probation or jeopardy of dismissal. The Assistant Director will help create and implement a full-scale advising and student success program for the target population. Serve as the supervisor for five professional academic advisors as well as one professional support staff member. The Assistant Director must have a demonstrated committed to student success and equitable educational access and achievement. Reports to the Vice Provost for Advising and Student Success.

Job Responsibilities

Provide day-to-day leadership of staff and operations in the Exploratory Advising Center

  • Supervise five professional advisors and one professional support staff member.

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Exploratory Advising Center including staff scheduling and service provision.

  • Lead proactive advising and outreach for students served by the Exploratory Advising Center including the use of data and predictive analytics to guide outreach campaigns and other interventions such as the response to CARE reports and faculty alerts.

  • Work closely with the Vice Provost for Advising and Student Success on the overall vision and implementation of advising and coaching services for students in target population.

  • Represent the Exploratory Advising Center on campus committees and task forces as deemed appropriate.

Oversee front-desk and reception operations:

  • Hire, train, and supervise the Office Coordinator

  • Support the Office Coordinator in the hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of student employees

  • Ensure constituents are receiving outstanding customer service through reception at the front desk(s), phone, email, and zoom

  • Provide exemplary academic advising for students served by the Exploratory Advising Center:

  • Answer questions regarding degree requirements and curriculum

  • Set up or review degree progress plans

  • Assist with course selection and registration questions or issues

  • Assist with understanding and following university policies and procedures

  • Provide information regarding additional resources, programs, and services that will aid student success

  • Provide success coaching to students who are in need of holistic academic support

  • Referrals to the appropriate department or person for further assistance, when necessary

  • Assist with Transfer Student Advising and Registration and New Student Advising and Registration

  • Maintain student advising records

Perform other duties as required/assigned by manager.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Earned master's degree

  • Minimum of five years of demonstrated academic advising experience

  • Demonstrated experience in supervising the work of others

  • Demonstrated leadership skills

  • Demonstrated experience in program planning and coordination

  • Demonstrated preference for collaborative approaches to problem solving

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, oral/written communication and organizational skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students and a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access

  • Demonstrated administrative experience. Could include managing budgets, project management, strategic planning and/or assessment.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • A master's degree in a related field (Student Affairs or Educational Leadership)

  • Understanding of student transition and success issues

  • Experience with strategic, proactive models of academic advising

  • Evidence of experience working with exploratory students and students who are not in good academic standing

  • Experience in strategic planning and assessment

Minimum starting salary: $65,000
