Department Summary

The Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism is an ACEJMC-accredited school with the only professionally accredited journalism master's program in the four-state region of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arkansas. The school is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, in one of the largest media markets in the country. We offer journalism classes in public relations, advertising, print/digital, broadcast/digital, and photojournalism. The Mayborn enrolls approximately 1,000 undergraduate students and 75 graduate students. Graduates have won many national and international awards, including Pulitzer Prizes.

The school offers students multi-platform professional opportunities including the award-winning North Texas Daily student newspaper, Denton Public Access TV, and student-run photography and ad/PR agencies. The school also hosts the annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference, the nationally acclaimed conference for aspiring and experienced writers, journalists and authors.

Position Overview

The Mayborn School of Journalism seeks a highly motivated public relations and marketing specialist responsible for planning and creating all communication and marketing for the School and the Mayborn Conference. This includes the annual report, e-newsletters, brochures, flyers and other collateral. Manages the content of the MSOJ website and other digital products including all social media. This position also plans and executes special events for the school, in addition to managing the logistics and event-management portion of the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related field and three years of experience in communications, marketing, advertising, or public relations; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of market segmentation, principles of marketing, integrated marketing communications principles and branding.

  • Ability to think creatively and identify new integrated marketing opportunities.

  • Ability to understand and effectively translate market research and other data.

  • Extensive knowledge of Associated Press style.

  • Ability to visually inspect products in multiple formats and assess and improve.

  • Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of others.

  • Proficiency in MS Office and requisite publishing, graphic design, and media tools.

Job Duties:

  • Create communication plans and materials for recruiting, research, events, daily/monthly activities, etc. that incorporate all social media channels, enhancing and protecting the Mayborn brand.

  • Website content creation and management.

  • Social Media creation and management.

  • Manages the logistics and event-management portion of the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference.

  • Create annual communication that includes annual report, monthly e-newsletters, holiday cards, degree/school brochures, etc.

  • Increase Mayborn social media presence through engagement on all social media platforms; consistently promoting school events, people, research and students year-round. Utilize online analytic data to enhance effectiveness, engagement, and exposure.

  • Support Mayborn faculty/staff/School with ongoing daily event, student and research communications.

  • Develop and implement year-long plan, that includes social media, to target prospective students and increase school enrollment.

  • Create and execute a monthly (and long term) calendar for all planned communications that includes, but is not limited to, deadlines for the annual report, consistent e-newsletters, and signature events such as the Mayborn Conference, Mayborn Mentor events, and Celebrate Mayborn.

  • Assist in the planning and execution of school events such as Celebrate Mayborn and Mayborn Mentor.

  • Oversee a graduate student, reviewing work and communication skills, mentoring the student for professional growth. Work closely with communication specialist to achieve goals.
