DESCRIPTION

The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Director-Compliance. UC San Diego, located in La Jolla, in the San Diego Metropolitan area, enrolls over 35,000 students, earned recognition as one of the world's premier research universities, and is ranked as one of the top-10 public universities in the nation. UC San Diego Athletics has a proud tradition of academic and athletic excellence, sponsors 23 varsity sports, and is entering the third year of transition to NCAA Division I as a member of the Big West Conference.

Under the direction and supervision of the Associate Athletics Director - Compliance, the Compliance Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of all NCAA compliance matters for a subset of sports. This will include understanding and monitoring recruiting, playing and practice seasons, camps and clinics, extra benefits, complimentary admissions, initial eligibility, admissions evaluations, and other compliance areas.

Understand and apply NCAA rules to all assigned tasks. Develops rules education for coaches, scholar-athletes, prospects, staff and parents of student-athletes. Provides interpretations, prepares various NCAA and conference waivers, and participates in investigations and self-reports.

The Compliance Specialist uses ethics and compliance concepts. Applies campus policies and procedures to evaluate a variety of ethics and/or compliance issues.

Responsible for conducting and documenting moderately complex assignments where analysis of situations and data requires the review and interpretation of a variety of factors.The Compliance Specialist will work with specific sports that will be determined upon arrival. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for monitoring countable athletically related activities, recruiting, and telephone logs for the department.

Assures an effective compliance program, including strategies to reduce risk and emphasize early detection of potential NCAA, conference and University rules violations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Thorough knowledge of program activity and best practices. Knowledge and skills to analyze, interpret, and review NCAA procedures to enhance monitoring of NCAA legislative compliance.

    Professional knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of NCAA athletics programs. Professional knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations related to academic eligibility, recruiting, amateurism, playing and practice seasons, and financial aid, among others.

  • Problem-solving skills; multi-task, work with frequent interruptions, and effective listener. Proven ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret data and provide appropriate response utilizing campus/department resources for report preparation and correspondence, and implementation of policies and procedures.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact in a positive manner with diverse clientele, using a high degree of confidence, initiative, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, patience and discretion in dealing with a diverse population of students, parents, staff, supporters, campus administrators, faculty and the general public.

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present educational and informational workshops and seminars to coaches and student-athletes.

  • Skill in reading and understanding complex and/or detailed documents such as NCAA and UC San Diego policies and procedures

  • Ability to analyze and resolve special circumstances (non-routine) which are brought forth by colleagues, student-athletes and coaches, ensuring that the goals of the athletic program are met and that outcomes are within compliance.

  • Ability to maintain equanimity while under the pressure of coordinating multiple projects and being subject to constantly changing priorities. Demonstrated ability to follow the athletic philosophy consistent with that of the UC San Diego Athletic Department and NCAA, and a commitment to diversity in all of its forms.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work periodic evenings, weekends and holidays.

  • Must be willing to travel to out-of-town meetings.

  • A background check and DMV check is required; a valid driver's license is required. Must also participate in the DMV Pull program and maintain a clean DMV record.

  • Must maintain NCAA certified recruiter status. Must maintain CPR/AED and First Aid certification.

  • This position is a mandated reporter of known or suspected child abuse or neglect, according to the California law, Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA).

  • This position is a campus security authority (CSA) for the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, which is a federal law requiring disclosure of information about crimes on and around campus.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $67,200 - $119,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.18 - $57.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
