The Assistant Director of Coding for Emory Hospitals provides leadership for overall coding operations throughout assigned facilities and is a key member of the leadership team in the Health Information Management (HIM) Department.
The Emory Hospitals include the inpatient and outpatient services at: Center for Rehabilitation Medicine, Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital, Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory University Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital, and Wesley Woods Hospital.
This responsibility includes participation in strategy development, implementation planning, execution, and monitoring of progress towards department and organizational goals.
This individual supervises all aspects of assigned hospitals coding processes and workflow, staffing, coding policies, and coding quality and education within a $2 billion plus revenue cycle.
Develops and maintains strong working relationships with other leaders in the HIM Department, Hospital Revenue Cycle, Hospital Finance, the Quality Department and key Medical Staff Leaders.
Manages coder staffing and workflow to meet DNFC targets set by Revenue Cycle leadership. Monitors staff productivity and daily coding production.
Manages coding vendor relationships. Monitors unbilled reports to mitigate backlogs and support facility cash targets.
Develops and maintains quality monitoring program to support 95% or better coding accuracy expectations. Provides staff education based on quality review findings, clinical advances and new technology, and industry-wide current topics. Works closely with Clinical Documentation Improvement, the Department of Quality, and Medical Staff and clinical leaders to support system initiatives and to identify documentation needs.
Responsible for hiring staff, performing time management and payroll activities for staff, monitoring staff performance and completing performance evaluations.
Monitors staff education requirements and initiates staff counseling and disciplinary action when necessary.
Works with HIM and system-level leadership to develops short and long term goals for area of responsibility.
Monitors organizational planning to assure adequate staffing. Participates in budget development; and, adheres to staffing and expense targets.
Serves on committees to represent Coding or provide Coding expertise with examples being facility level CEEOC's, Data Quality and Integrity, Billing Compliance; Supports ad hoc efforts throughout the system needing Coding expertise such as the system-wide Clinical Effectiveness teams.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in health information management.
Education and experience may be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree for highly qualified candidates.
Must have 10 years hospital based coding experience required with a minimum of 5 years in a hospital based coding supervisory or lead role.
Preference will be given to candidates with multi-hospital system experience and academic experience.
