The University of Maryland Department of Transportation Services seeks an Assistant Director of Business Operations to join our team. This position is pivotal in shaping the financial strategy, support systems, and cost center operations that directly impact the department's success.

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Department of Transportation Services, the Assistant Director will collaborate with divisional financial leadership regarding financial reporting, budget creation, forecasting, expense tracking with monthly reporting, accounts payable and receivable, compliance, and internal controls functions while providing strategic guidance and leadership to the accounting team. The position requires a strong understanding of accounting principles, financial analysis, operational accountability, and organizational change management. This position will also have an operational function, overseeing the department's special events and parking enforcement operations. This position will directly or indirectly supervise over 20 full-time staff and over a dozen part-time staff, exempt and non-exempt, as well as bargaining unit, full-time, part-time, student, and contract staff. Also, responsible for tracking all revenue and expenses while evaluating unit profitability.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with the division in budget preparation, forecasting, and monitoring, tracking all expenses, and providing the divisional budget office with monthly reports. Providing leadership and guidance to departmental senior leadership regarding their financial portfolios, tracking staffing levels consistent with financial projections, managing the department's capital asset (i.e., vehicles, technology, etc.), planning and managing the departmental procurement process, and leading and managing the accounting team.

  • Track all department cost center profitability.

  • Administration of Departmental financial programs and agreements.

  • Responsible for supervising the Special Events team, including but not limited to managing staffing levels, event parking requirements, coordinating event contracting, providing training and development, ensuring the highest levels of customer service, and managing revenue by tracking revenue against expenses.

  • Parking enforcement and special events are critical to the Department of Transportation Services. These units often work together while achieving departmental and institutional goals. This position will manage this relationship and ensure departmental values are reflected in our community. It will also be responsible for tracking all enforcement and event revenue ($3.5M) and expenses while evaluating profitability for these units.
