Primary Purpose

The Assistant Director of Academic Success/Writing Lab is responsible for providing leadership in the area of academic excellence and success and works with a team of professionals to offer students an array of learning and tutoring services and support. Learning and academic support initiatives include but is not limited to tutoring services and programs, workshops to support developing habits of the mind, summer academic readiness initiatives, and more. The incumbent has significant leadership responsibilities for developing retention initiatives and positively impacting student persistence. As a member of the leadership team for the Academic Success Center and reporting to the Director of Academic Success, the Assistant Director of Academic Success/Writing Lab assists with the coordination of tutorial services and writing support for the Writing Lab. The incumbent will work collaboratively and creatively with the Director of the Writing Program and specified faculty liaisons to coordinate strategic initiatives and services that assists the Rhode Island College's Writing Program, including but not limited to embedded tutoring and workshops. The Assistant Director of Academic Success/Writing Lab works in conjunction with the Director of Academic Success to ensure academic support services are grounded in relevant student development theory and helps to provide students with high quality support services.

Essential Duties

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of and facilitate the tutorial services in the Writing Lab.

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, support, and evaluate student writing specialists, providing them with high quality training and development on writing pedagogy, theory, and practice.

  • Oversee weekly scheduling of tutorial staff each semester.

  • Define applicable standards for writing tutors and develop appropriate professional support as part of a robust writing tutor curriculum.

  • With Director, provide on-going training for tutors consistent with best practices in the field.

  • Assist with developing and facilitating innovative academic support initiatives from the Academic Success Center (i.e., workshops, class/discipline-specific presentations, summer prep, study skills/developing habits of the mind workshops, writing courses, etc.) that assist undergraduate and graduate students, including but not limited to traditional, nontraditional and multilingual student populations.

  • Provide Director of Academic Success with assistance in recruiting, training and supervision and evaluation of other peer subject tutors as needed.

  • With Director of Academic Success, consult with academic departments to determine needs of academic support and strategies for peer subject tutoring.

  • Collaborate with the Director of the Writing Program and specified faculty liaisons to develop and facilitate strategic initiatives, including but not limited to embedded tutoring, writing workshops, and tutoring services.

  • Consult with other academic departments across the College to develop and implement appropriate writing support and services as needed.

  • Work with New Student Programs and the Writing Program to share any relevant and helpful information to new students about writing assessment, the Writing lab, etc.

  • Participate on the College Writing Board as needed.

  • Participate in key college events, including but not limited to Admissions yield events, New Student Orientation programs, and Welcome Weekend.

  • Collaborate with other offices to support the advisement and support services of students; these offices include but are not limited to Academic Affairs, Office of Academic Advising, Disability Services Office, the Center for Scholar Development, Project Excel, Registrar, Admissions, and New Student Programs.

  • Increase awareness of the Writing Lab's services by creating content for marketing materials.

  • Work with the Director of Academic Success to increase awareness and usage of the Academic Success Center.

  • Maintain webpages, marketing materials, and social media for the Academic Success Center.

  • Conduct ongoing evaluation of services to assess effectiveness and guide planning; submit end-of-term/year reports on the Writing Lab to Director of Academic Success, including other key stakeholders, as needed.

  • Refer students and faculty to learning and support services on campus as appropriate

  • Maintain awareness of changes in academic requirements and college and departmental policies.

  • Participate in divisional meetings and retreats.

Occasional Duties

  • Work evening and weekend hours as required to meet the needs of students.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Academic Success Center.

  • Work with individual administrators or faculty members on writing issues in specific classes or disciplines, or on developing new outreach programs.

  • Engage in professional development, including ongoing research in best practices, attendance at conferences, such as LAANE, MAA, AMA.

  • Work with individual administrators or faculty members on issues of writing in specific classes or disciplines, or on developing new outreach programs.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • At least 2 years of teaching writing at the secondary or higher-levels.

  • Strong evidence of successful collaborations with faculty and staff partners.

  • Evidence of strong organizational skills with the ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction for students with diverse needs.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development approach and academic coaching techniques.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with college students, evidence of problem-solving ability and management skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a racially and ethnically diverse student population.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to be self-directed and to problem-solve remotely are critical characteristics for this position.

  • Evidence of commitment to professional growth and development in academic support.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with computer-based systems and software.

Required Qualifications

Education: M.A. in English, Composition, or related field.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience managing and coordinating writing tutoring services, working in a Writing Center and/or Academic Success Center and successfully overseeing tutors. Strong demonstration and evidence of successful collaborations with multiple academic programs, offices and departments to support relevant stakeholders. Ability to coach and support students with learning and study strategies. Demonstrated experience with working with diverse students and learners.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Peoplesoft

  • Understanding of student development theory

  • Counseling and conflict de-escalation skills

  • Bi-lingual (Spanish preferred).
