Title Assistant Director, Academic and Research Technologies Group Department Management Information Systems (3010) Location Main Campus Position Summary
The University of Arizona Management Information Systems (MIS) department seeks a creative, positive, dependable and skilled Assistant Director, Academic and Research Technologies Group to manage technical operations and initiatives for our academic programs, with a primary focus on cybersecurity.
The Assistant Director will work closely with faculty, staff and students to develop, design and deliver leading cybersecurity education and research. The successful candidate will be responsible for full end-to-end management of these activities. Key operational infrastructures include a Cybersecurity Operations Center (CSOC) and a "virtual classroom" server environment that provides significant computing resources directly to remote and on-premise students, faculty and researchers. An ideal candidate will be a knowledgeable, innovative, self-starting achiever who continuously improves our IT operations, courses, academic programs and research.
This is a new position that will report to the MIS department's Director of Instructional and Research Technology. The Assistant Director will support other IT operations, projects and academic computing activities within the Eller College of Management.
The MIS department is one of the six academic departments in the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona. Founded in 1974, the department was a pioneer in defining and advancing the field of Information Systems. Since its inception, the MIS Department has made outstanding contributions to the field, both by creating relevant and impactful research and by offering leading edge educational programs. The department has well-established and highly successful research centers that have generated over $200M in funded research projects since the 1980s. MIS faculty members have also been successful with technology transfer initiatives through successful commercialization of their research. The department has been ranked in the top 5 in the field of information systems for over 30 years. The department is currently ranked #1 amongst public institutions for both graduate and undergraduate MIS programs.

Duties & Responsibilities
Architects, implements, maintains and continuously improves our virtual server infrastructure and CSOC.
Researches, evaluates and implements new opportunities and technologies relevant to our users.
Respectfully and patiently assists end-users with varying levels of skill.
Supports users both in-person and remotely in a variety of channels: phone, e-mail/ticketing system, chat, screen sharing, etc.
Administers servers in a heterogeneous Windows and Linux environment.
Discovers, learns and masters software broadly related to cybersecurity including penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, network scanning, threat intelligence, log analysis, analytics/visualization/dashboards, and others.
Creates helpful user and peer documentation and keeps it up-to-date; trains and presents knowledge to others.
Contributes or creates written material for requests, proposals or justifications.
Documents work performed and updates status of tasks and projects.
Patches, updates and upgrades operating systems, software packages and hardware, often outside of work hours to minimize impact to users.
Proactively monitors systems status and user experience to ensure high performance and availability.
Serves as IT risk manager for all systems and data under their purview; performs audits and assessments as needed.
Securely configures and manages servers, networks and storage systems for robust IT systems operations.
Contributes to our code/script repositories, deployment and configuration management platforms.
Researches, specifies, evaluates, procures and renews software licenses, hardware systems and support contracts.
Develops proofs of concept, test instances and other experimental IT environments, gathering input and feedback from stakeholders. Iterates on designs until services are operational.
Aides in developing our short, medium and long-term technical strategy; develops plans for achieving results.
Mentors students in their studies and development.
Manages physical spaces, including their availability, security, scheduling and cleanliness.
Participates in, organizes and leads meetings.
Responds to IT incidents and emergencies outside of work hours as needed.
Serves as our liaison to the Cybersecurity community, particularly in the Phoenix area.
Represents the MIS Department and the Eller College of Management in the IT community on campus and beyond in topics and initiatives relevant to our activities.
Collaborates on IT operations and efforts in the MicroAge Lab, Artificial Intelligence Lab, MS in Business Analytics, MISonline, MSMIS and other endeavors within the Eller College of Management.
Manages relationships and partnerships within MIS and the Eller College of Management, as well as with the College of Engineering, UITS, UA's Information Security Office and the campus IT community.
Backfills for the Director of Instructional and Research Technology when required.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of cybersecurity tools, software and concepts.
Experience with scripting or programming languages, particularly Python and Powershell.
Significant experience managing IT systems and services in both Windows and Linux environments.
Experience with virtualization hypervisors like VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V.
An understanding of managing systems with DevOps/SRE tools, patterns and concepts.
Demonstrable experience managing complex IT projects, initiatives and operations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent research, organizational and planning skills.
Successful experience working both in a team and independently with minimal supervision; comfortable with shifting priorities.
Five years of progressively responsible information technology/cybersecurity experience; OR Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Technology or related field AND three years of progressively responsible information technology/cybersecurity experience OR Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
Experience successfully supporting remote users and/or students.
Experience working in higher education or an academic environment.
Experience developing technical modules or assignments for courses or assessments.
Experience managing systems with DevOps/SRE tools, patterns and concepts.
Experience with analytics and visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, R, Hadoop, Sisense, kibana, grafana and graphite.
Experience with IDS/IPS tools or software like Snort, Suricata, Bro and OSSEC.
Experience with network and network scanning tools like nmap, Wireshark, pfsense, Aircrack-ng and Wifiphisher.
Experience with penetration testing tools like Kali Linux, Metasploit, Burp Suite and John the Ripper.
Experience with vulnerability assessment software like Qualys Qualysguard, Tenable Nessus and OSWAP ZAP.
Experience with log management and analysis tools like Splunk, greylog, logstash and elasticsearch.
Experience with network services like Active Directory, SSH, DNS, DHCP, VPN and firewalls.
Experience with Windows IT lifecycle management tools like RSAT, MDT, SCCM and PDQ Deploy.
Experience with Linux IT lifecycle management tools like ansible, puppet, chef, jenkins, kickstart and preseed.
Experience with monitoring tools such as Zabbix, nagios or SCOM.
Experience with database servers like Oracle RDBMS, MySQL and MS SQL Server.
Experience with desktop virtualization software like Microsoft Remote Desktop Services, VMware View and Citrix.
Experience with public cloud providers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.
Experience designing and administering locked-down IT environments that have sensitive data and/or compliance requirements.
Advanced degree in MIS, Cybersecurity, Computer Science or related discipline.
