Georgetown's Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS), founded in 1919, is a premier school of international affairs. SFS provides a rigorous education grounded in both theory and practice while instilling the Jesuit value of service.

Job Overview

Advising Deans of the SFS Undergraduate Program (BSFS) assist the Dean of the School of Foreign Service in carrying out their responsibility for the general efficiency of the instructional programs of the School and in carrying out University policy. As members of the Dean's staff, they represent the School's educational purposes in diverse fora - both inside and outside the University.

As well, Advising Deans have the authority to handle and resolve many delicate and complex conflicts between student and faculty, student and parent, parent and the University, with all appropriate tact, sensitivity, and a fine sense of academic standards applied to each such conflict.

In conjunction with the faculty, Advising Deans develop and monitor the core curriculum of BSFS and the curricula for the seven majors offered by the program. They initiate, implement, and review academic policies and instruct faculty members in the application of these policies.

They monitor students' progress toward the degree, certify them for graduation, and arbitrate important academic issues; and administer registration for courses, provide academic orientation to the University, organize faculty advisors, and chair and serve on numerous School and University committees.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean and Director of the Undergraduate Program, the Assistant Dean serves in an advisory capacity with faculty, other academic deans, and field committee chairs regarding matters related to curriculum development.

This position has been designated as Hybrid. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in the humanities or social sciences

  • At least 3 years of professional experience in academic advising and/or counseling in a comparable university setting

  • Proficiency in student information systems and applications

  • Ability to work closely with faculty colleagues in an atmosphere of trust

  • An understanding of academic and administrative protocols

  • Ability to relate to and understand the academic and personal needs of students

  • Superior organizational ability

  • Ability to exercise discretion and tact in all interactions

  • Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language

Preferred Qualification

International affairs education or experience in international education

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$54,616.00 - $100,493.33

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
