Position Summary

The University of Alabama School of Law seeks to fill the position of Assistant Dean of Public Interest Law and Assistant Professor of Law in Residence. The Assistant Dean will manage the organization, planning, and operations of the Public Interest Institute of the Law School. The Assistant Dean will also teach Public Interest Lawyering and other related courses.

Detailed Position Information

The University of Alabama School of Law seeks qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Dean of Public Interest Law and Assistant Professor of Law in Residence. The Assistant Dean will manage the organization, planning, and operations of the Public Interest Institute of the Law School. This includes, but is not limited to, oversight of:

  • public interest and public service employment and pro bono opportunities for students, including all government, judicial, and public interest law jobs.
  • public interest curricular initiatives, including traditional courses and certain externships.
  • student public interest activities, the student Public Interest Law Board, and the Dean's Community Service Award and Order of the Samaritan Award programs.
  • public interest law stipends awarded by the Law School.

The Assistant Dean will also play an important role in recruiting, advising, and mentoring students who show an interest in public service and/or public interest law practice and help students understand the public interest responsibilities of lawyers. The Assistant Dean will further the Law School's efforts to build community leaders, which is an important role for the State's only public law school. The Assistant Dean will also teach Public Interest Lawyering and other related courses and may have responsibilities related to supervision of certain externships.

We seek applications from entry-level and lateral candidates with demonstrated potential for outstanding leadership, teaching, and scholarship.

This is a year-round (12-month) contract position. The duration of the contract is for a period of three years.

This position is non-tenure earning and does not include the possibility of tenure or security of position. Salary and benefits will be nationally competitive. All applications are confidential to the extent permitted by state and federal law; the position will remain open until filled.

Minimum Qualifications

Distinguished academic credentials, including a J.D. from an accredited law school or an equivalent degree (such as a Ph.D. in a related field) and experience in public interest law or public service. Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Alabama or become licensed no later than one year after accepting the position. Entry-level candidates should demonstrate potential for strong teaching and scholarship.
