Position Summary

The largest undergraduate program at Washington University, the College of Arts & Sciences contains approximately 4,400 degree seeking undergraduate students and more than 600 non-A&S second majors and minors. Student Academic Affairs, housed within the College Office, comprises five central functional areas: four-year advising and the first-year experience; student progress and academic success; academic policies and administration; post-graduate and pre-professional planning; and pre-health advising and programs. The Assistant Dean of Advising 1 for Four-Year Advising and the First-Year Experience will provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate students in the College of Arts & Sciences. In addition, the Assistant Dean of Advising I will develop and refine strategic initiatives related to the College's innovative four-year advising model, while also assisting in the implementation of academic technologies and instructional design that improve the student advising experience.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Serve as a four-year academic advisor for undergraduate students in each class.

  • Provide academic advising to support student retention and graduation initiatives.

  • Interpret and explain university policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, staff, and administration.

  • Identify and help resolve obstacles impeding the academic success of students.

  • Analyze students' academic and personal issues or concerns and provide referral or intervention services.

  • Support students in developing a required academic plan to meet graduation requirements.

  • Coordinate mentoring or specific programming for students within various academic programs.

  • Guide students through college and university level administrative processes.

  • Liaise with Arts & Sciences departments and programs to ensure a holistic student academic experience.

  • Work with campus partners to ensure holistic support and tracking of student progress.

  • Maintain appropriate student records and documents student interactions.

  • Contribute to training or mentoring student assistants, peer advisors, or newly hired academic advisors.

Develop, implement, execute, and assess assigned program(s).

  • In coordination with the supervisor and the Director of Student Academic Affairs, develop materials, trainings, and ongoing support for four-year advising efforts, including support for advising-related aspects of the College's curricular innovation initiatives.

  • Using relevant instructional design knowledge, continually assess, refine, and innovate new advising modules using the College's learning management software.

  • Support coordination, execution, and maintenance of advising-related training materials for the University's student information system.

  • Support the functional area's group advising initiatives in terms of design, organization, and assessment.

  • Collaborate in the design of program goals, including development and implementation.

  • May make decisions regarding annual implementation of processes related to assigned program(s).

  • May be responsible for managing assigned program(s).

  • May train or mentor student assistants, peer advisors, or academic advisors.

Support the College Office with additional programming and mission critical priorities.

  • Support cross-functional academic advising for progress counseling, pre-professional development (pre-health, pre-grad, pre-law), fellowships and scholarships, and post-baccalaureate premedical advisor.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree preferred.

  • Knowledge of liberal arts curricula and of concepts, practices, and procedures related to undergraduate education.

  • Previous experience advising students in an educational or academic setting.

  • Knowledge of student-centered instructional design techniques for both in-person and online settings.

  • A strong commitment to cultivating relationships with students in the context of a learning environment and to delivering excellence in student academic affairs.

  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal. Audiences should include students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders.

  • Sound judgement, high level of maturity, and a mindset for equity and fairness, with a proven ability to handle confidential information responsibly in sensitive situations involving students.

  • Ability to thrive in a position that requires independent judgement and to step in as a reliable team member on various collaborative projects as needed.

  • High degree of detail-orientation with the ability to see how details fit into and impact the larger whole.

  • High degree of self-motivation, organization, accuracy, and productivity with an ability to manage time, meet deadlines, and follow through on projects in a timely manner with varying degrees of pressure.

  • Ability to project genuineness and warmth as a service-oriented communicator.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and four years' experience in an educational or academic setting or Master's degree and two years of experience.

Salary Range

$53,100.00 - $90,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
