Goals:

  • Select the best possible candidates for admission to the Doctor of Medicine Program at the University of Minnesota to meet the future physician needs of Minnesota.

  • Enhance the diversity of the student body in the University of Minnesota Medical School classes.

  • Develop innovative admission programs to meet the educational mission of the University of Minnesota Medical School.

  • Test and implement evaluation and quality improvement processes.

  • Maintain the integrity of the admissions process.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Leadership:

  • Serves in the Dean's senior leadership under the direction of the Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education.

  • Work collaboratively with the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Admissions, Duluth Campus, Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, St. Cloud Campus, and the Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program to ensure consistent, best, and evidence-based admissions practices for all applicants to the University of Minnesota Medical School.

  • Work with the Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education on setting admission criteria for transfer students and for joint degree programs (i.e., MD/PhD, MD/MBA, MD/MPH, MD/MHI., and JD/MD).

  • Work with the Vice Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to emphasize diversity and increase the diversity of the Medical School.

  • Aligns with University policies and Office of General Counsel policies.

  • Supervise the Admissions Staff and Office.

  • Work closely with the University of Minnesota Foundation to increase scholarships for all medical students. Oversee processes for the awarding of scholarships.

  • Provide leadership to support the Admissions Executive Committee. Organize and direct, with the Admissions Committee Chairs, the Twin Cities medical student Admissions Committee.

  • Oversee the streamlined application process to ensure that committee member time is optimized.

  • Assure training of all Admissions Committee members on interviewing, the selection criteria for applicants, and how to review and present applicants for admission.

  • Assure training for faculty and community physicians who conduct interviews for the Admissions Office.

  • Oversee the organization of the interview process.

  • Provide oversight of the final class list and management of the alternate list.

  • On issues related to medical student admissions, represent the Medical School to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC); American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS); Medical College Admission Test (MCAT); the UMTC Health Careers Center, Executive Faculty and the University of Minnesota.

  • Serve as a spokesperson for the Dean to the faculty, applicants, students, and the public regarding admissions policies.

  • Oversee materials for written and electronic publication regarding the admissions process.

  • Oversee all personal correspondence mailed to applicants.

  • Advise and counsel applicants who are not accepted regarding their subsequent application and career goals.

  • Ensures adherence with all regulatory and credentialing requirements as well as annual oversight of conflict of interest of all members engaged in the admissions process.

Evaluation/Assessment/Program Improvement

  • Develop and implement short-term and long-range programmatic strategies for achieving the goals of the Admissions Office of the University of Minnesota Medical School. In consultation with the Dean, the Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, and the Faculty Assembly, develop policies for the composition of the medical school class.

  • Develop a strategic plan to ensure the Admissions process meets the goals of the Medical School.

  • Oversee and publish statistics regarding the number and characteristics of applicants.

  • Evaluate admissions criteria as predictive of student success in a science based medical curriculum as well as graduate performance, residency preference, location, and specialty, and the physician workforce needs of Minnesota.

  • Maintain and develop efficiencies in completing the review and selection process.

Recruitment:

  • Oversee the development and updating of effective recruitment methods including electronic information resources and on site group informational sessions.

  • Consult with Pre-Health Advising professionals in various colleges and universities.

  • Develop working relationships with the Director of Admissions and the Deans of the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Biological Sciences, and the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota for joint recruitment activities.

  • Visit colleges and universities in and out of Minnesota to recruit highly desirable candidates for admission.

  • Work with the Medical School Communications to promote the University of Minnesota Medical School.

  • Coordinate student recruitment for those underrepresented in medicine and science with programs aligned with the Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • Evaluates impact of various modalities to identify ways to improve visibility and recruitment outcomes.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • M.D. degree and qualification for a faculty position at the associate professor rank required.

  • Demonstration of progressively responsible direct administrative experience, preferably within the undergraduate to graduate medical education continuum and/or in admissions.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated presentation, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to function independently, anticipate and resolve problems, and provide leadership for committees or teams.

  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing and actively promoting diversity.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in applying and interpreting policies and procedures.

  • Superior analytical ability and critical thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A record of advocacy for diverse medical students, medical student candidates, and education.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement visionary strategies for recruitment and program development, including measurement of outcomes.

  • Experience developing and leading programs along a path to excellence.

  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively and collaboratively with multiple stakeholder groups within a large, dynamic organization.
