Position Purpose:

Under the direction and guidance of the Custodial Manager, the Assistant Custodial Manager ensures a clean, safe, and effective learning environment for students and staff. This role leads and supervises custodial staff, coordinates substitute custodians, and collaborates with maintenance technicians, grounds crew, and school administrators on daily operations and special projects.

Responsibilities:

1.Leadership and Supervision:

Priority: Essential Percent of Time: 20%

  • Direct and empower the custodial team across multiple facilities, emphasizing excellence in cleanliness, safety, and team cohesion.

  • Strategically manage staffing, including the coordination of substitute custodians, to ensure uninterrupted custodial services.

  • Champion a culture of high performance and continuous improvement by modeling exceptional work ethics, safety practices, and professionalism.

  • Facilitate ongoing professional growth and development opportunities for all custodial staff, recognizing and nurturing potential leadership within the team.

  • Assist the District Custodial Manager with annual performance appraisals of custodial staff and make recommendations for employment action.

2.Operations Management:

Priority: Essential Percent of Time: 20%

  • Spearhead the development and enforcement of comprehensive custodial schedules and protocols that align with the academic calendar and special events.

  • Proactively manage supply chain logistics for custodial supplies and equipment, ensuring cost-effective procurement while maintaining quality standards.

  • Foster collaborative partnerships with educational leaders and department heads to ensure custodial operations enhance the learning environment and support the school's educational objectives.

3.Quality Control:

Priority: Essential Percent of Time: 20%

Examples of this work include:

  • Implement a rigorous quality assurance framework that includes regular audits, feedback loops, and benchmarks for cleanliness and maintenance standards.

  • Drive the adoption of innovative cleaning techniques and technologies that elevate facility cleanliness, streamline operations, and improve outcomes.

  • Act as a liaison between custodial teams and academic staff to integrate feedback and continuously refine cleaning standards and practices

4.Health and Safety:

Priority: Essential Percent of Time: 20%

Examples of this work include:

  • Lead the charge in upholding and exceeding health and safety standards, ensuring all custodial activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Promote and integrate sustainable practices and eco-friendly products into daily custodial operations to minimize environmental impact.

  • Coordinate swift and effective responses to health emergencies and facility incidents, ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.

5.Reporting and Documentation:

Priority: Essential Percent of Time: 20%

Examples of this work include:

  • Maintain impeccable records of custodial operations, including detailed logs of cleaning schedules, safety inspections, and staff training.

  • Deliver insightful reports to the Custodial Manager and key stakeholders, highlighting achievements, challenges, and strategic recommendations.

  • Play a pivotal role in budgetary planning processes, advocating for resources that enhance custodial effectiveness while adhering to fiscal constraints.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 5 years of custodial experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.

  • Ability to lead others, communicate effectively, and organize tasks.

  • Ability to Train others in the use and care of custodial equipment

  • Ability to learn and efficiently use the district purchase order system

  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, chemicals, and equipment.

  • Certifications in health and safety, or willingness to obtain them.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in a related field

  • Proficiency in computer software related to facilities management.

This position reports to: Custodial Manager.

This role requires frequent and meaningful interaction with a broad spectrum of internal and external stakeholders, including students, faculty, administrative staff, maintenance teams, vendors, and regulatory agencies. The purpose of the contact ranges from coordinating cleaning schedules to ensuring compliance with health and safety standards and addressing immediate facility-related concerns. Effective communication skills, discretion with confidential data, and a proactive approach to problem-solving are vital to successfully navigate these interactions.

Problem Solving:

The Assistant Custodial Manager encounters a diverse array of problem-solving scenarios that demand quick, strategic, and effective solutions. Challenges include resolving conflicts within the custodial team, addressing unexpected maintenance emergencies, balancing quality control with budgetary constraints, and ensuring the safety and cleanliness of facilities during public health crises. Failure to adequately resolve such problems can result in compromised safety for students and staff, increased operational costs, and potential regulatory non-compliance.

Freedom to Act :

Autonomy is a significant component of this role, with the incumbent expected to make day-to-day operational decisions that align with district policies and strategic objectives. This includes prioritizing tasks, managing staff assignments, and immediate problem-solving. Decisions requiring significant financial expenditure, policy deviations, or strategic shifts are escalated to the Custodial Manager or relevant administrative authority. The incumbent is encouraged to innovate within the scope of their responsibilities to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
