Job Summary:

Assistant course directors are critical leaders in the education of medical students at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Broadly, the responsibilities of this role include development and implementation of curriculum and experiences that introduce medical students to the core knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to develop into a competent physician.

Responsibilities include assisting the Course Director with course administration, curriculum execution, program innovation, curriculum review, and student support, as well as course faculty recruitment, support, and development. The Assistant Course Director will also serve as a liaison between course faculty and the Office of Assessment, Evaluation, and Outcomes for test development.

Over the course of the year the time commitment of the Assistant Course Director is about 2 hours per week. However, the Assistant Course Director can expect that their work hours will be heavily weighted in the weeks prior to, during, and immediately after the course (~15- 20hrs/week).

Supervision Received: The position will report to the Assistant Dean, Pre-Clerkship Curriculum and Course Director.

Key Responsibilities:

Prior to course start:

  • Communicate and meet with the Course Director regularly to plan and prepare for the course ahead

  • Vet and revise course learning objectives with the Course Director & Content Directors prior to course start

  • Ensure the course schedule and granular information sheet are accurate

  • Recruit and develop faculty for delivering, facilitating, and/or presenting educational content

  • Distribute accurate learning objectives to the teaching faculty for each individual course session

  • Communicate with faculty to ensure deadlines are met

  • Confirm course materials submitted by teaching faculty adhere to the guidelines and expectations set forth by OME and achieve the course's goals and session-specific objectives. This includes proper review and vetting of course materials submitted by the teaching faculty and providing feedback as needed

  • Work with OME and curriculum office to coordinate facilitator and faculty development needs

  • Ensure advance coordination with support staff to allow adequate time for completion while recognizing their competing responsibilities

  • Serve as a resource and communicate in a timely manner with administrative staff and faculty

  • Develop and create course content including session materials, pre-work, etc.

  • During course:

  • Provide 'day-of' course support and presence in all course sessions, or ensure appropriate faculty coverage

  • Ensure preparedness to assume temporary responsibility for the course's production

  • including content, organization, and course execution in the event of the Course

  • Director's absence.

  • Ensure all teaching faculty and students are aware and understand the course's

  • competencies and learning goals

  • Serve as a resource and communicate in a timely manner with students, administrative staff, and faculty

  • Assist with Office Hours and responding to student emails

  • Teach select content in the course and facilitate learning events as needed

  • Lead "just-in-time" faculty development sessions as needed

  • Develop and produce review/clarification materials after course sessions as needed

  • Communicate with teaching faculty after their sessions as part of the continuous quality improvement processes

  • Track, monitor, assess, and identify areas for improvement in the curriculum with the goal of continuous quality improvement or as dictated by the curriculum oversight bodies

  • Create and foster a professional learning climate

  • Other responsibilities essential for course production as identified the Course Director

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Academic rank will be determined during the interview process after discussion between you and the department about your previous experience and academic desires.

Instructor:

  • Master's Degree, M.D., D.O. or Ph.D. Degree.

  • Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment (open rank) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine

  • Experience with healthcare professions education, pedagogy, and assessment

Sr. Instructor:

  • Master's Degree, M.D., D.O. or Ph.D. Degree.

  • Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment (open rank) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine

  • Experience with healthcare professions education, pedagogy, and assessment

Assistant Professor:

  • Master's Degree, M.D., D.O. or Ph.D. Degree.

Preferred Qualifications (Same for all ranks):

  • Experience teaching medical students.

  • Experience with and knowledge of medical education at the University of Colorado School of Medicine

  • Demonstration of effective collaboration and teamwork

  • Thoughtful understanding of the medical knowledge a student must possess in order to be a successful early clerkship student

  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and value working within a team

  • Ability to cultivate relationships with both university and community physicians and be available to answer questions and problem solve as needed

  • Ability to cultivate sustainable relationships with other faculty in the school of medicine and work to ensure the Pre-clerkship Curriculum is well represented within the school

  • Enjoy working with students, helping them with any learning issues, providing advice on how to troubleshoot/resolve issues, and assisting students to ensure their success

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Instructor: $5,000 to $10,000 as .05 FTE salary support plus benefits, up to the educational salary cap of $200,000

Sr. Instructor: $5,000 to $10,000 as .05 FTE salary support plus benefits, up to the educational salary cap of $200,000

Assistant Professor: $5,000 to $10,000 as .05 FTE salary support plus benefits, up to the educational salary cap of $200,000

Associate Professor: $5,000 to $10,000 as .05 FTE salary support plus benefits, up to the educational salary cap of $200,000

Professor: $5,000 to $10,000 as .05 FTE salary support plus benefits, up to the educational salary cap of $200,000

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
