St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking an Assistant County Attorney for our well-established County Attorney's Office whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

The St. Johns County Attorney Office is responsible for providing legal services and issuing legal opinions for the Board of County Commissioners, the County Administrator, County Staff and County Advisory Boards.

The ideal Assistant County Attorney candidate must possess St. Johns County's core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a collaborative team environment.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide legal services in the area of County and Local Government law and related fields. Board Certification in City, County, and Local Government Law a plus.   Provide legal advice and counsel to the Board of County Commissioners, County Administrator, County Staff, and County Advisory Boards. Work is performed under general direction of the County Attorney with significant latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Position requires a high level of critical thinking and ingenuity in bringing successful resolution to unusually complex and strategic situations and issues.

Some of of the duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performs legal research and prepares opinions on various legal issues.

  • Advise the Board of County Commissioner, County Administrator, County staff, and County boards as may be required, relative to legal matters affecting the County.

  • Attend County Commission meetings and workshops, Planning and Zoning Board meetings and other Advisory Board meetings as needed.

  • Prepare legal opinions, drafts ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds, leases, and other legal documents Represents various departments in matters which do not require the professional services of the County Attorney.

  • Respond to and resolves sensitive and complex inquiries and complaints including: responding to requests of the County Attorney, County Administrator, and elected officials for information and interpretation.

  • Process public records requests.

  • Meet with elected officials, department heads, staff, and the public as needed.

Candidates are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited school of law and possess a Florida license to practice law.

  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience practicing in the area of local, city, county, or state government law, preferably in the State of Florida.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
