The Assistant Controller runs the day-to-day accounting operations and month-end close. Responsible for meeting deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including general ledger preparation and financial reporting. Responsible for developing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements.


  • Responsible for all aspects of the month end close process, including preparation of financial statements

  • Prepare and review month end reconciliations of Balance Sheet and Income Statement accounts

  • Maintain the financial reporting and general ledger structure

  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close

  • Manage General Ledger, AP, AR and billing teams

  • Assist in development and implementation of new procedures and features to enhance the workflow of the department

  • Lead person on all Financial Statement audits

  • Manage day-to-day Banking transactions

  • Financial statement analysis comparison of actual results to prior period

  • Lead ERP automation projects to streamline processes in department

  • Support Controller and SEC Manager in SEC filings

  • Assist Controller on ad-hoc reporting and special projects

  • Respond to other department managers regarding financial results

  • Provide guidance to accounting staff on processes and procedures

  • Perform other duties as assigned or required

  • Build and manage a high performing team that maintains a strong "client service" focus and culture

  • Responsible for recruiting, interviewing and hiring qualified team resources

  • Identify and ensure the training and development needs of team members are met

  • Plan and define performance goals with senior financial management to set overall and team-level performance measures and goals

  • Establish collaborative relationships with internal and external clients to understand the business

  • Identify additional ways to be of service by ensuring timely exchange of information to promote client satisfaction

  • Foster a "client service" culture and instill a work ethic that includes collaboration


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting -required

  • Minimum of 3 years leading a month end close process is required

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in California is required

  • Big 4 Public Accounting experience is highly preferred


  • Ability to manage independently and partner with others to obtain results

  • Strong collaboration and leadership skills

  • Proven ability to think strategically and implement a strategic vision

  • Proven experience coaching and motivating a productive and cohesive team that consistently exceeds expectations

  • Duties typically performed in an office setting

  • This position requires the ability to use a computer keyboard, communicate over the telephone and read printed material

  • Duties may require working outside normal working hours (evenings & weekends) at times

Qualifications Education and Experience Requirements: * Bachelor of Science degree with emphasis in accounting and finance. * Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred. * Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, cost accounting with the emphasis on job costing, and a background in income tax and real estate law. * A background in real estate development is preferable. * Minimum three to five years' experience. * Good language skills, both written and oral. * Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions. * Able to work independently with minimal supervision. * Proficiency with various computer hardware, software and accounting systems that are used in the real estate industry. * JDEdwards accounting system experience desirable.
