Our company of artists, conservators, craftspeople, designers, and construction professionals deliver world-class interior restoration, conservation, decoration and new design services to clients in the Civic, Commercial, Institutional, Museum, Sacred Spaces, and Theater sectors.

The position is based in our Brooklyn, NY office, but requires periodic travel to our project sites around the country. All work will be under the direct supervision of a Conservator. On-the-job training will be provided as needed.

Function & Scope: The Assistant Conservator position performs activities related to the research and planning of restoration, preservation, and conservation projects to conserve historic materials with the highest authenticity possible by utilizing all disciplines and following the principles of scientific methods of conservation in accordance with the AIC Code of Ethics. They will assist in historic finishes investigations, building and artwork surveys, and treatment implementation on projects for significant landmarks with EverGreene's team.

Requirements & Skills

  • Ideal candidates will have 2+ years of experience with a master's degree in Historic Preservation - emphasis on conservation science and documentation of historic building materials/artworks and conditions; OR 8+ years without a Master's degree.

  • Professional knowledge, skill, and ability in understanding and applying the philosophy of preservation and with one or more conservation skills equivalent to or gained with professional certificates or degrees from recognized preservation and/or conservation programs at universities and colleges.

  • Ability to conduct primary and secondary research related to the individual site, historic structure, architectural element and/or its materials, or to the scientific aspect of needed or required treatments.

  • Knowledge of professional conservation practices and ability to implement these practices at a level equivalent to academic work at a graduate level. This includes excellent writing and communication skills: the ability to produce reports and documentation of high professional quality in content and appearance.

  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and methodologies, basic lab chemistry, and scientific methods that relate to materials analysis, fabric deterioration, conservation treatments, materials identification, and monitoring programs.

  • Ability to maintain an active role in or with groups concerned primarily with preservation and conservation such as associations and organizations devoted to professional preservation and conservation issues.

  • Assist in establishing, maintaining, and developing records for treatment programs, sampling procedures, and testing programs that may include treatment histories, project histories, casual relationships, completion reports, or effects of repair campaigns.

  • Assist in recording sites and field conditions in written and tabular formats that are assessments of conditions, material deterioration mechanisms, causes and effects, and recommendations for program development.

  • Artistic ability in color matching, inpainting/loss compensation.

  • Computer skills, at minimum including Microsoft Office Suite, scanning and digitizing images. Bluebeam and AutoCAD experience preferred.

  • Commitment to delivering the highest quality work

  • Must be able to work independently.

  • Experience working on scaffolding and at heights.

  • Willingness to travel

Special Requirements: This position requires the employee to work on job sites where strict compliance with OSHA safety procedures including the consistent and proper use of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is critical. This position will require occasional travel.

  • OSHA 30 Certification or equivalent NYC SST Certification (certificate can be completed after hire)

  • The individual must be able to navigate a jobsite that is under construction.

  • Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking.

  • Possess the ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.

  • Must be willing and able to wear full PPE at all times, including half mask or full mask respirator when required.

  • Must be able to safely use manual tools and/or power equipment common in the construction trades

  • The ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.

  • The ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing.

  • The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.

Occasional visits to job sites may be necessary, involving walking and interacting with construction environments. Flexibility for hybrid work schedule; partial remote (1+ day/week.) The position requires frequent sitting while working on a computer, as well as standing, bending, and reaching. The use of computer equipment may involve repetitive motion of the hands and wrists.

  • This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.

  • Working at heights and the use of platforms, scaffolds and articulated lifts.

  • Exposure to paint products, solvents, lead and other toxic substances

  • Exposure to dust, molds, fungi and bacteria

  • Possible proximity to flammable or combustible materials.

  • Working in awkward positions, or performing repetitive physical tasks and standing for long periods of time.

  • Lifting heavy or awkward objects.

  • Possible wear & use of respirators and body harnesses.

  • Ability to perform work in very hot or cold environments.
